I've noticed recently that my lemon orphington hen has cuts on her toes. None of them seem serious, none really seem to bleed much (no dripping even), but I can't figure out where they're coming from. They are confined to the coop for now until they are feathered out more because it's been pretty cold here, and there's nothing sharp in the coop (I checked!). I spend a lot of time out there just hanging out and watching them and no one is pecking that I've seen- I haven't even seem them bother her cuts at all. The only thing I could think of was dry air- could that make her toes crack and bleed?

And should I do anything about them? I've been just keeping an eye on them up until this point.

Thanks in advance!

There was a thread recently asking folks to put their general location in their profile. This is a prime example. If you live in the desert SW US, especially if it's been windy lately, it does seem possible -- though unusual. I'd look very closely for scaly leg mites, too.

Thanks- I'll change it. I didn't realize I didn't have my location on there, because I usually include that.

But I still can't figure out what the problem is. I haven't noticed any scalleyness on her legs, but I've never seen it before so I'll check again and compare more closely to the other chickens. I bought some blue kote today and put it on her feet- hopefully that will help.
