Way back, there could be 35 kids in a single classroom, with 1 teacher, and that teacher had to teach multiple grade levels.

way back I was looking at old "Class photo days," and found 3- with over 40 kids in the classroom. As the kids got older though, it seemed the numbers lessened. I suppose it was families that moved away, or kids that were problemic.

I know that firsthand. 2 room school house - kindergarten through 5th grade in one room and 6th through 8th grade in the other. Teachers had taught both of my sisters. I remember being asked are you like your sister 'M' or 'shudder' like 'P'. I wasn't astute enough to say, "Somewhere in between."

I met a kid on college who had been in a class of 10.

Dd #1 was at the school yesterday. She got a letter from the neurologist's office with the appointment schedule, giving dates, and times of upcoming appointments. She provided copies, for the office to give the teachers. The school counselor saw her, and called her into her office. The counselor assured my daughter that the school psychologist is on board, and they are working on everything. They are still collecting, compiling, and assessing data, to come up with a plan. They have a lot of what they need, but not all of it yet, and they're still compiling data on the teachers too. The psychologist is wanting an IEP test done, but has to wait for further testing results from the neurologist to have grounds for requesting it.

Dd informed her, she already has the request for the test, from grandson's PCP. The neurologist was aware she had it, and told her that she could turn it in, along with the results from the next test. There is a backlog for this particular test, and it can take a few months to get it done. The counselor requested that Dd go ahead and turn in the request now, so they can get this expedited. She did.

Dd mentioned to the counselor that the biggest reason she brought in the appointment schedule, was so the teachers might fill in, and return the questionnaire, by the time they go to their next appointment, as the doctor requested. They're holding things up a bit, by not answering the questions. WHAT?

The counselor asked the school secretary about it. Yes, Dd had turned in the paperwork, along with the second letter requesting that the teachers comply, and return the filled out questionnaire. Yes, she had put a copy in each of his teachers' inboxes. Yes, the teachers got both the first, and second requests. Dd said the counselor was very nice, but she was very angry. She got copies for herself, and the school psychologist, with notes to him about there being zero cooperation on the part of the teachers, and the total disregard for school protocols, and policies.

BTW, DD did a written request in the agenda, for any schoolwork/homework that he missed, to be sent home, so he could do it. No response. Nothing. No work has been sent, nor has there been anything in his agenda about it being excused. No communication about it, whatsoever. She began writing notes for herself, and for the school psychologist.

There was already a meeting with these teachers. They were informed of protocols, and what was expected of them. One of the issues addressed was that when the school excuses an absence, THEY must excuse it too, regardless of whether they see the doctor's notes personally, or not. When an absence is excused, they must either excuse the missed work, or send it home, allowing time for it to be completed, returned, and the appropriate grade given after the work is returned. They can NOT put a zero/failing grade when an absence is excused. They may have actually excused the work, which is why they have not sent anything home, after her written requests, however, this shows lack of cooperation, because they should have communicated this, in the agenda.

The counselor did reassure Dd that they are very aware of some serious problems, and they are/will be addressed, and taken care of. There seems to be quite a bit to deal with, and they are awaiting the next couple test results from the neurologist, then they will develop a plan of action, and call a meeting with us, the teachers, the counselor, the school psychologist, and the principal. They will strictly monitor the teachers to make sure they are following the plan of action correctly, and to make sure they're doing it with the proper attitude.

She's been somewhat of an emotional roller coaster. She wants to run in, and get it all fixed IMMEDIATELY, to help her son. I get that. I keep reassuring her that by the end of the year, I think he will have flourished to the point of being caught up, and excelling. This will continue next year too, and he will be able to surpass expectations, once again. I know the frustration of having to wait on the process. I keep telling her to focus on the goal, as much as the process of getting there. It's helped some. The reassurances of the school counselor went a long way too.

It sounds like the school counselor is working hard to get this situation handled. Hopefully, this is all taken care of and settled so the poor kid can get on with learning. I pray that his teachers for next year are more supportive and cooperative.

Where is the principal? Why haven't these teachers been sent to his/her office where the paddle with the holes in it is kept???

Sheesh. This is beginning to sound like a hostile learning environment.

I pray that his teachers for next year are more supportive and cooperative.

And the current ones are unemployed.

The school psychologist called my daughter today. It's a she. She has been in touch with the neurologist. Grandson's psychologist went on vacation for two weeks, this, and next, but she had given a lot of input to the neurologist, so things are going to proceed. Messages have been left, and both of the psychologists will talk soon.

The first thing she mentioned is that her position in all of this, is to advocate for my grandson. Next, she mentioned that she, the school counselor, and the principal are on the same page. The teachers are not. There is going to be a meeting on Tues. afternoon with everyone (except my grandson), including my daughter, and myself, present. In the meantime, the teachers will be called into her office, and made to sit, and fill out the paperwork in her presence, in accordance with the neurologist's instructions, and given to my daughter. There are going to be changes in regards to some of the teachers' methods of doing things, and things expected of them in regards to my grandson. It was expressed that it would be nice if the teachers willingly got on board with the plan, and changes, but whether willing or not, they would comply, and with a positive attitude towards my grandson, OR ELSE. She did not say what the "or else" entailed, but she gave a clear impression that they didn't want to go against her, or the principal on this.

Hopefully, things are finally looking up, or soon will be.
