Chapter #2 On the road
We spent the next several hours mostly sleeping or watching the new arrivals hatch. My sleep was filled with troubled thoughts about what had transpired with Ow.
Coming into the world, being all new and fragile was hard enough without having to worry about the laws of the universe concerning life, death, and other such complicated matters. I just didn't understand. I had just come into this world, just begun to understand that I wasn't the only being in existence, and was having trouble coping with that particular revelation already. What was that second consciousness that had invaded my being? What ever it had been, it was powerful. My brain was full of thoughts much too complex for any substantial part of me to understand.
I decided to temporarily put it out of my mind, and just figure out how to get my body working correctly. Ow and I stumbled about, every so often suddenly acting on the urge to peep as loud as we could for a few minutes for no discernible reason other than that we could.
By the time the ground tilted, and the hands begun to grab us, I was left with a firm grasp on standing, but had not quite mastered walking.
"Whats happening?!?" a shouted to Ow, panicking as we slid quickly toward the wall.
"Those are the Humans. There gonna get us! RUN!" But I couldn't run, the ground was tilted too far, I couldn't get traction on the floor, despite how bumpy and dirty the mesh was. We piled up on top of one another against the wall. We were all screaming franticly, setting up an infernal racket. The Humans, clad all in white with protective face masks on. They were hideous. A small morbid part of me wondered what horrors lurked under those masks. Through it all I was trying my best to keep sight of Ow. We were swiftly getting pushed away from each other.
k, heres a little more, srry for the cliff hanger(s)! more soon!
I saw her get sucked under the hoard of other fuzzy bodies. I was filled with a burning need to stay close to my new companion. Swallowing my fear, I let myself be pulled under as well. It was a confusing labyrinth of limbs, beaks and cries of terror. I tried to separate Ow's out of the chaos of voices echoing and bouncing off the walls. I squirmed and wriggled, getting considerably squished, being underneath every one. Just as I was loosing hope of ever finding Ow, a sharp pain stabbed into my back.
"You!" said a beautifully familiar voice. "I've been calling for at least a minute!" she said haughtily.
"There you are!" I cried, trying to turn and face her.
"No, there YOU are" she contradicted.
"No, I saw you get sucked under and I..." I realized how petty our squabble was when compared to our perilous situation. I let her have that one.
The load pressing down on us was getting lighter as time went on. Finally we were at the top of the greatly diminished pile of chicks. The relief was short lived however, when we realized that it was our turn to be abducted by the human things. We flipped and flopped aimlessly, panic overtaking us completely, drowning out all possibility of organized thought.
this is it, I thought, my life has just begun, I refuse to let it go now! A hand reached down toward us, I knew there was no chance of escape. I braced myself. The hand roughly grabbed Me, Ow, and about three others at one time. We were whisked though the air, and tossed us down a hard cold shoot. We landed with a thump, that luckily ended with a bounce. Then, there was a disconcerting feeling...moving, but not moving... I was standing still, but the ground its self seemed to be moving. We were on what I later learned was called a conveyor-belt. I stumbled closer too Ow, who had landed relatively close to me. My heart was still beating franticly from our disorienting fall. I tried to calm myself. I cuddled into Ow's fluffy side, still panting.
As I settled down, I was stunned in another fashion. I looked back along the move-ground thing and was shocked by our sheer number. There were hundreds! The room was filled with the collective defining noise of terrified chicks. As we watched in awe, one one the chicks was inadvertently jostled by the others and stumbled right off the move-ground!
Ok, I decided to put all of what ive put up so far in one post! enjoy. more coming 2morrow, maybe a bit more tonight!
Prologue
Well. This is what I've been waiting for, what I've been dreaming of for so long. What we've worked for. It hardly seems real. Its my duty to tell the full story. All of it. Even the painful parts. The parts that no one wants to hear, or believe. The parts that I can hardly stand to relive. All about the suffering, the humans, the best friends anyone could hope for, and of our eventual demise. Its important that the world know our story. I should start at the beginning. The very beginning ...Well, here goes...
Chapter #1 Hatching
I feel I have always been. Indescribable. I exist. Floating in a sea of... is. It was different before though...I think. I am starting to understand that there's a difference between was and is.
I'm not sure when was changed to is, but I'm fairly sure it was not long ago. I don't know when, but I began to have thoughts, incoherent, and blurry at first, but their growing clearer all the time. At some point, I came to the fuzzy conclusion that there must be something more than this blank (though warm and comfortable) is. As my thoughts clear, so does my perception that I am something. I can feel. I have a... "me-ness" Soon after this epiphany, I felt that my is had become to small to accommodate my "me-ness". This lead me to decide it was time to do something. I moved. Ha! I did something!
With this new development came another, almost simultaneously. A noise came from some part of me. It felt glorious! I wondered if I could do that when ever I wanted to. I tried again. "Peep!" I was astounded! This was amazing! I did it again. And again. And again! Than I found out that doing "move" and "noise" at the same time was even better! I moved and moved and peeped and peeped for what seemed like forever. I didn't want to ever stop! I knew this "move-and-noise" thing was what I was meant to do.
But after some time, I became tired. So I did "still-and-no-noise" for a while until I felt ready to keep going. After a long time, I was rewarded, in the form of a tiny sliver of light...
I expected my freedom to be filled with pride and exhilaration. Instead, it was filled with exhaustion and wet egg membrane. I did the "still-and-no-noise" thing for a long time. I dreamt of warm, cozy things.
after some time, my eyes reopened to take in my surroundings. It was warm. The floor was a fine mesh that was uncomfortable to sit on. There were other chicks around me, fluffy and yellow. I chirped in amusement. They looked so funny! I looked down at myself then.
Hmm...I was yellow and fluffy. Thoroughly embarrassed, I looked around to see what else there was to see. We seemed to be in a large, rather dirty white-ish box, with a big, bright thing that seemed to be the source of heat. There were still a lot of us trying to get out of our "is" things. There were many chicks walking around, picking at each other and pecking at bits of shell. Some chicks were sorry, wet, limp looking creatures. Ugh. I hoped I hadn't looked like that.
Well then, I should be walking around like the other self respecting fluffy chicks. I gathered my legs under me and pushed up. I rose to my full hight in pride!..for about half a second until I fell over directly into one of the more confident looking chicks.
"watch it!" he snapped.
"Sorry." I muttered, embarrassed again.
I stumbled my way over to a corner, where a very sad looking thing was laying. I poked her with my beak.
"hey, its time for 'move and noise!'" I politely informed her. I waited. Nothing. I poked her again.
"come on! Its fun!" I demonstrated by peeping as loud as a could, getting a few dirty looks in response. I was confused.
"Shes not getting up." I stared at a chick who had spoken, standing a bit away from us. I noticed there was a several inch radius around the chick on the ground.
"I don't understand." I chirped in reply.
"just walk away, shes doing the 'no-move-no-noise-forever' thing"
"Oh." I still didn't get it.
The other chick sighed and walked away. I lie down next to her. She was cold and hard. She was thin and boney. Very not so good looking. She was...empty... NO! She needed to get up. Suddenly grief overtook me. It wasn't fair. I laid my head on her and shook with sadness that chilled me to the core.
Then, I felt a...a presence, in my mind. A..."there-ness" Like I wasn't alone in my self. Then there was thoughts that formed into words in my brain. "You need this don't you? I will help you this time, but don't always expect this kind of thing."
I felt a surge of power run through me, and the the "we" inside my head was an "I" again. The presence was gone.
I was so stunned that it took me a minute to realize that the cold chick was taking in shallow breaths. she let out a low hissing sound and opened one eye. Then she made a sound.
"gif oof meh nenth" Shocked, I stood up and stared.
"What?"
"I said, get off my neck, although that statement is no longer relevant seeing as you have obliged my request despite your unfortunate lack of communication skills."
"..."
"My name is Ow" she stated boldly, getting to her feet. "whats yours?"
"My name? Oh, umm, I'm not quite sure. How do you get a name?"
"Well, I'm glad you asked. When I hatched, I did all the normal things, got fluffy, walked around, ect. Then, these things began to reach in and grab us. All the others made a lot of noise, but all ended up getting grabbed and carted off to who knows where. I was the last one in this place, running franticly in zig zags until my strength gave out and the thing got me. With the last of my energy I gave the beast an almighty PECK! It said something that sounded quite profane, followed by 'OW!' and dropped me. I took Ow as my name. I wandered off into this corner and slept. When I woke up, there was a whole new batch off eggs in here. No food. No water. I did the no noise no move thing more and more until i didn't move or make any noise at all. then everything was dark and painful for a long time...then...I don't know... I... cold...I...I don't know. Now I'm warm, and moving and talking... You did this! You made me move again I think."
"No, it couldn't have! It must have been the 'we' in my head..." I trailed off, realizing how stupid I sounded.
"alright... I guess I owe you now"
"No, well... can we be friends though?
"Ya, someone's gotta protect you from the humans."
"Humans? What are they?"
Ow seemed amused.
"Oh, you'll see boss."
