Tylan works really well on Respitatory problems. Tylan 50 injectable can be given orally 1/4cc for bantums which is the dose I would give since she's small. For five to seven days. So sorry she's sick.
Poor thing! Unfortunately, chicks are super prone to all kinds of respiratory problems. I've lost several as chicks even though I tried antibiotics. It makes a difference to them when you spend time with them while they are sick.
Well, as of 7pm last night when refusing sugar water I thought s/he was a goner. Grey, sunken eyes and gasping. I fully expected to fine him/her dead this morning. I put the heat lamp low and covered with a towel, humidifer at full blast in my enclosed shower stall....
this morning I awoke to CHIRPS. And s/he's eating and drinking little bits on her own! Still sneezing a bit but I'm praying the worst is over. S/he'll stay in the house as long as needed and I will continue the abx in drinking water for another week (it's been 10 days)
SO far I've offered yogurt, crumbles, oatmeal, Poultry booster, rice, tiny bit of cream and s/he's picking at her crumble the most.
I hope s/he will be OK too...such a funny little creature. I'm going to post a new thread for newbies about what to always keep on hand for emergencies. I am SO new to chickens and wasn't sure WHAT to do so I read a lot here.
My feed store didn't have the Tylan, neither did the vet who I spoke with on Sunday. Where do you get it?
Thank you
Poor boy....... Tylan can be found at Tractor Supply...or LA200. They are cattle med and found in the cattle isle. If your vet can give you Baytril that works good too...but id get something soon. Keep him warm, you can add some Gator aid or poultry vitamins to his water. Predisone can also help with inner swelling if you can get any.
No trouble walking...I think it was his eyelids? He wouldn't open them. He's been on duramycin antibiotic in his water for 10 days now. This rattle started 11 days ago and vet told me to put them ALL on it (I have only 6 chickens, all 9-11 wks old) but he was doing fine til ysterday, seemed to be gtting better than CRASH yesterday. Is that common? Seems much better today but still sneezing a little but doesn't sound as congested/rattly. I'm worried about keeping him away from the others for too long. I have a heat lamp on 24/7 and a humidifier in a small bathroom. Feels like a sauna in there!
I don't know if they vaccinated for anything. I bought them at the feed store in April. Two of the girls that work there said their 4 Polish from this same shipment all died the first week they had them.
I'm putting the antibiotics in his water...should add gatorade to that too? I do have Poultry Booster vitamin stuff I am adding water to soften it.
I have some dog prednisone in the house....
Thanks all SO much. I am hoping he/she recovers fully. And should know soon if she's a she or a he???
Yay! I'm so glad she is doing better. Such a cute little bugger. I like the Tylan soluble you put in water. It is more spendy I got mine at amazon.com 1 teaspoon per gallon. Refreshed daily for five days. It's very good stuff. I have heard good things about Baytril too. I'm pulling for the little guy I wish you the best of luck.
Hmm, well if it's the eyelids and not the actual eye then that may be something else. I don't know what it is but my first batch of chickens were swept with exactly the symptoms you are describing last year and half of them died. I hope yours pulls through! Also, just my opinion, but I would not have a humidifier in a small room with him. If he's having trouble breathing, his lungs are probably gunked up and the humidifier will probably make it easier for moisture to collect in his lungs, which would most likely not help. Good luck!
How cute! I just picked up 12 little Polishes and I hope they're going to be as cute as him/her! Keeping my fingers crossed its a her! I hope he/she feels better!
It's a respitory illness, not Mareks. When you can't breath and your lungs fill with fluid you get weak.( hubby has lung issues). Duramycian really doesn't kick the illness quickly enough. Tylan or La200 or Baytril will. With prednisone ... If 20 mg I break them in half then into pieces about the size of a large quilting pin head, if you know what I'm talking about......Maybe makes ten or more pieces. This helps reduce swelling in the bronci tubes and eases breathing. I would not use a humidifier. You don't want any more moisture being inhaled....
When you can't breath you don't want to eat much, so if his appetite is poor I would add some type of poultry vitamin or for now gator aid to keep him hydrated and his organs functioning well.
