My Local TSC Selling Sick (MG) Chicks

there is a women...not sure if i should mention her name...but she is on byc and in the michigan chat thread...shes from michigan and works for tsc...she made a statement regarding this but didnt say where the outbreaks happened...if you go back in the michigan thread you can see for yourself

I raise and breed silkies that I've gotten from a local breeder and from a hatchery. (don't remember which hatchery right now). Last year my TSC had silkie chicks for the first time and I got sooo excited and bought 20 of them. They were healthy as far as I can tell, didn't lose more than one or two and they didn't infect my flock with anything contagious. BUT, they grew up and those were the ugliest silkies I've ever seen! Just sad looking, no beards, little toe feathering, just didn't look like they were bred well. I stood in my barn looking at them and said "there is no way in heck I'm breeding this into my flock." I gave them all away. I will never buy chicks from TSC again.

Just my 2 cents on TSC chicks, for what it's worth.

But dont buy from there.

And cant speak for other TSC stores other then the one I work at. And can say our chicks are very well taken care of. We like making sure they are clean and enjoy chit chating and educating new and old chick owners. I havent heard of any issues from the hatchery we buy from BUT have from 2 others that we will not allow customers to special order from due to heath concerns.

Good to know. There are good, knowledgeable, conscientious people everywhere, despite their employer's policies.

I just wanted to be the 1st TSC employee to jump in here.

But will 100% agree that everyone should be warned. As a chicken owner and breeder, I take the health of my stock very seriously. So much so that I dont wear my clothing from work to the barn to my birds to keep biosecurity in check.
I would hate to bring unknowns into my flock all because I went to work. I
Also do the same for the chicks at work as well. And even have the few other chicken owner employees on the same page.

We're frequently asked for pics of the parents of the babies we advertise...Not being able to see the parents is a total crapshoot...

Meriks is a very serious problem every were and can be vaccinated against. I don't know why stores that sell chicks don't get vaccinated birds it is not that pricy and would be added on to the price of the chick. I only buy from breeders that have vaccinated birds
