My Love Affair With Ducks...

@Mimi13, it's been almost a year since you got your ducks! :woot

How are your ducks and chickens getting along? What is your setup for them now?
It’s been a rough year for her too. It was a move she regrets. She has even considered shock therapy to overcome the sadness and sense of failure owning dux is.

Thank you for asking about my little waddlers. It has been almost one year since my life with ducks began!

What started off as six little ducks wound up being FIVE, along with what was supposed to be all girls left me with one raspy little fella, aka RalphieDux.

Here is what I’ve learned in almost one year:
  • Ducks are precious when little
  • Not so much when grown
  • Ducks are messy
  • Little poops turn into huge wads that are fired with precision
  • Ducks are not cuddlers
  • Indian Runner ducks actually RUN
  • Ducks constantly mate...I mean constantly...anywhere and everywhere
  • Give a duck an inch and they’ll take a mile
  • Ducks are fast
  • One thing is clear, Ducks own YOU, not the other way around
  • Ducks lay an egg every single day, during the night or early morning
  • Ducks can weasel their way to just about anywhere they want to go
  • Ducks can maneuver steps very well, they don’t have to have a ramp
My ducks still live in the same little “house” where I first put them. I put a fresh layer of straw down every night before I lock them up. They have access to feed and fresh water during the night as well. I usually give them some ‘duck soup’ when I lock them up. This crumbled boiled egg, green peas and cat food in water has definitely helped me teach them to come when called.

I turn them out between 8 and 9 each morning. That late only to make sure all eggs are laid. Once I open their door, they are off, to every corner of the property. One thing about them is they stay confined. A fence, even a low one, keep ducks in or out (as long as they can’t fit through the holes). My ducks actually utilize my entire fenced property. I don’t know how many laps they make around my house every day.

They will find any drop of water there is, whether from a downspout or a puddle in the driveway. They have two pools of water that they definitely enjoy.

One of my chickens, and only one, puts the ducks on the run. Gabby, my Speckled Sussex, put a flog on them when they were first being introduced and the ducks haven’t forgotten her. As far as the rest of the chickens, the ducks rule. My main roo, Rusty, only runs from one thing, RalphieDux. He’s actually missing a few tail feathers because of RalphieDux.

RalphieDux has clamped down on a few of the chickens’ feathers, but thankfully the hens have always managed to get away. The chickens like to eat out of the ducks feed pan and usually that’s where they get caught. The ducks sneak up on the chickens in the duck house and the squawking and flying begins. So far, so good, no harm has been done!

So, RalphieDux has started something new this spring...asserting his manly behavior. For whatever reason, he feels the need to follow me and dabble at my shoes or jeans, to the point I’m afraid he’s gonna make me fall. It doesn’t matter what I’m doing or carrying. My response has been, if it’s where I can, to bend down and whisk him up and hold him, which he hates. And then I love all over him. If he could puke I’m sure he would. But secretly I love it.

Today, my sidekick decided to take a picture of me loving on the offender!

Yeah, he pooped on me! But I was one step ahead of him. I had a towel over my lap.

Just look at that sad face would ya!
