A crest is literally a hole in the skull bone that is plugged with fatty tissue, forcing the feathers to grow in a steep angle to form the crest. Additionally crested ducks are prone to mental disorders and disabilities.
That is the duck way of saying "Do me!" - My thirteen fall ducklings are currently driving the drakes to exhaustion, it is thirteen ducks versus eight drakes. They leave the older drakes (Limpy, Erpelchen and Spot) in peace, but there's bickering here all day long. Now the drakes get some of their own medicine…I think this behavior is very interesting. In the beginning of the ducks maturing, my White Layer was the possessive girl. Now, however, it seems that Hershey, my little runner girl, is possessive over my runner male. It seems anytime I am around I see her running right behind Ralphie Dux, just chattering her brains out. It’s quite funny. I wish I had gotten a longer blip of her doing this, but her chattering was short lived this time!
It is only the runner female that is doing it. And what’s interesting is I haven’t seen any duck mating in a while now.
Wow where are these? My drakes would be very unhappy to lose their penises.
Honestly I don't remember where but while I was doing research about ducks before getting them I definitely remember reading it somewhere.
Well that’s good to know. Oh the horrors seeing one of my chickens gobble it up as soon as it turned loose! But I swear I did read that somewhere. I wish I could remember.
