My Love Affair With Ducks...

I think this behavior is very interesting. In the beginning of the ducks maturing, my White Layer was the possessive girl. Now, however, it seems that Hershey, my little runner girl, is possessive over my runner male. It seems anytime I am around I see her running right behind Ralphie Dux, just chattering her brains out. It’s quite funny. I wish I had gotten a longer blip of her doing this, but her chattering was short lived this time! :lau

I love him. I have read that crested birds could possibly have skull problems. Is that true? Have you noticed anything?
A crest is literally a hole in the skull bone that is plugged with fatty tissue, forcing the feathers to grow in a steep angle to form the crest. Additionally crested ducks are prone to mental disorders and disabilities.
For crested hens every mating poses a thread, as the drake grabs on to the ducks neck or head. If they catch the crest they may rip it out, killing the poor duck.
Crested drakes are in danger during drake fighting for the same reason.
I never wanted crested ducks, but Ideal Poultry "blessed" me with two crested black Swedish ducks (i had ordered Magpies!) and since then the crest has popped up in several ducklings, i now have the two crested ducks and two crested drakes, with LeeRoy Brown being the largest duck i have. He stands four feet tall if he wants to and snatches samiches right from your table.

That is the duck way of saying "Do me!" - My thirteen fall ducklings are currently driving the drakes to exhaustion, it is thirteen ducks versus eight drakes. They leave the older drakes (Limpy, Erpelchen and Spot) in peace, but there's bickering here all day long. Now the drakes get some of their own medicine…

It is only the runner female that is doing it. And what’s interesting is I haven’t seen any duck mating in a while now.

And on another subject, since you are very knowledgeable, does a drake’s penis fall off yearly? I have read conflicting articles. I’ve read where it can get frost bitten and/or prolapsed requiring its being trimmed of necrotic tissue. But then I’ve also read where it falls off and regrows each Spring, which seems somewhat contradictory. If it falls off in the “off season” how would it ever get frostbite? I’m really just curious.
