I am so not happy about this thread. Now I want, nay NEED Marans!

Can anyone tell me if any from a hatchery will be even close to dark enough to be considered marans?

Thank you. Yeah...I e-mailed him before. I can't afford him and probably wouldn't even if I could. In the spirit of being nice, that's all I'll say. ;-)

As far as I know most of the bigger hatchery Marans are watered down varieties. Like with the hen on the top of this page her eye is green. I don't know of a Marans that has Green eyes but if you find one let me see it. I have looked at all my birds and never have I gotten a green eye on one of my birds.

The Black Coppers so coveted today need to have almost a RED eye color, which most of the ones I have seen are orange. As are some of mine. Eye color is the hardest to get straight in the Marans variety. Also American Marans even the imported ones have what is called a squirrel tail genetic problem that people like Bev Davis says they are having a booger of a time breeding it out.

The die hard Marans breeders will look at the whole bird not just the egg color. One cannot ignore the genetic material coming from the so called lessor colored brown egg. Those eggs can be improved by breeding with only ROOSTERS that come from the darkest eggs because it is they that promote the dark egg color not the hen. If the hen lays a light colored egg it is not her fault it is the breeders fault for not using better quality Roosters. Rooster hatched out of the darkest egg that is available.

Happy hatching

Thanks Arklady. :) I don't even care about breeding, as bad as that sounds. I just want some hens that lay beautiful dark eggs. :)

It's all Katy's fault posting those gorgeous eggs. hehe

LOL....and mine are just plain old cuckoos that I've had for 6 years, not anything fancy!! I do have a couple of blues that are laying now and some wheatens that should start in the fall. I'm anxious to see their egg color.

Blues? Oh crud. That's not good. You shouldn't have told me that.

No...no...just any ole' color will do me. I'd better be good and not get picky or I'll never get any. heh

Hmmm...let's make a road trip MP. ;-) I miss my BLRW's, too. *sigh* Coulda shoulda woulda. I had marans at one point, too. Just bought certain things before I was ready and got in over my head. *sigh* No more split minute decisions.
