My Meatie Pen

Now, call me crazy... but if you do the meat bird thing every year-- and you take down/ rebuild this pen every year- why don't you make a perm pen structure and save yourself the trouble and time of redoing it every year?

Agreed! If I were making something truly temporary that I didn't want marring my house at other times during the year, I'd make a movable tractor type situation with electro-netting that could be moved around the lawn. That way I could just roll up the netting, park the tractor behind the garage and it could all be done or undone in a matter of about 30 min. time.

We couldn't do a movable tractor. The ground is no where near flat and it is quite hilly too. I had thought about making it permanent but I have to run it by my husband first.

Could be.

I was thinking it would be nice to have the yard back if you didn't have chickens and ever needed it for a party or some such

Roll up the fencing, pull the t-posts, throw your soiree and then reclaim it in the name of chickens after the event (depending too on how much space you have right? may not need it...)

We actually have plenty of space. That's just a small part of the yard. The thing is, those darn posts are about 2 feet in the ground. DH's idea there. I might just convince him to leave it. I can use it as a rooster grow out pen in the Spring, Summer and Fall.

You know if you wiggle those posts a little after a good rain and then use the t-post pounder HANDLES you can USUALLY pull them right out!

A friend of mine showed me that trick when I was lamenting leaving behind the cross fencing we did at the old house...I pulled all except 2 out alone after that...just slide the handle part down and hang on to the other handle (and watch you don't have your chin over top of the t-post per my friend)...not too hard at all, plus I saved a TON of money reusing them here!

Or if you ever need to enlarge to accommodate more at one time...you never know...chicken math applies to broilers too I've heard!
