My Meatie Pen

Im so jealous of all you folks that can have set up like that and not have to worry aabout predators busting through those chicken wires...it wouldn't last 24hours where I live:(
Nice set-up!

chicken wire is about as good as plastic zipper ties where i'm at as well... Heck, if an old turkey would hit that wire hard enough, it'd break out... let alone something wanting in for a dinner...

To me, best bird pen building materials are steel posts and corncrib panels- wouldn't have it any other way...

Anymore, I can barely let anything free range in the daytime, it's that bad. You'd think something could be done, but those critters come from all over for a free dinner.. I just can't afford to lose anything at this point in time,

I set up my meatie pen at the far end of my kennel which still houses six terriers. The chicks have a big fenced yard where they go out every day. I thought that nothing would come within a mile of those rowdy dogs. So far the birds are doing well and have not been threatened by predators, but don't you know, just a few days ago, I was standing in the field next to the kennel behind some brush watching for deer, and what should come trit-trotting by but a big red fox. It walked within 10 feet of where I was standing. The first think I thought was I wonder how many of my chickens it ate. Then I realized it wasn't carrying one so I figured it didn't come from the direction of the chickens. I've been super paranoid ever since. My old terriers once hunted red fox, and I know they would set off an awful racket if they were to see a fox, but they are mostly hard of hearing and a little sight-challenged and spend a lot of time sleeping. So I find myself looking out the window every five minutes to check on the chickens. There's always something to cause a worry, foxes, feral cats, hawks, raccoons. I need to put up the electric netting that just arrived from Premier. That will add an extra measure of safety I hope.

We've seen very little to no predators around here. Black snakes every so often but that's it. We have trail cameras up in several places and all we get pictures of are cats.

We have predators in abundance here....but we also have the great equalizer:

The dog on the left, loyal and brave, is now doing duty at Heaven's Gate, never forgotten. The dog on the right is Thing Two, AKA Chocolate Thunder, AKA Jake....silent, swift and deadly.... and always vigilant.

LOL, that "fertilizer" will kill burn the grass right up and it won't come back for at least a year or more.

chicken fertilizer is the most potent of any ever know available... if people are scared of the synthetic commercial stuff, they need to put some of this on... in a little teeny tiny ammount...

Yes we put chicken manure in our veggie garden. Have to add it in small amounts but it works so good. The taste of our veggies is way better than when we were using 12-12-12 garden fertilizer. The garden is much greener and lush, love doing it the organic way!

While they were still young when we built this we put a pastic chickenwire kinda stuff all around I have mentioned about something getting in but my husband said it would be ok we hardly have a strat o adays so I felt it was ok. ONe day we had a dog from a neighbor chasing around the pen his grand daughter got the dog and took it home but sometime after that the dog had got a squirrel.

I had called to the person and said if this dog gets in which my chickens I wouold shoot it, he didn't seem to think it was ok and I said he needs to keep it under control well the next day the dog was in with my chickens I saw one of my chicks at the time out of the fenced in area and I wondered HOW did you get out I saw no one out and looked in the back of the coop there was the dog that had the squirrel and the two conish rock in a conner and both had blood on their necks.

I grapped the dog it is a shiz zoo by the neck I was not kind didn't shake it or hurt it in anyway and threw it in the dog crate I didn't have a 22 cal at the time LONG STORY and called the person that was looking after it he said he did own it and he was not the person to talk to I got so I called the person who had the dog before and I told her what had happend and explained that if this dog gets in agian there is no doubt I WILL KILL IT but I didn't know if my two chicken would live. After calling I checked both one had a puncture wound and the other looked as though the feathers was pulled out.

I am lucky I know how to treat wounds and all that stuff they seemed to be in shock I reckon so but I had the kids stay clear of them and if they got near I would spank them but all went well. After this my husband and I put hog wire all the 2way around the fence in part and not nothing can get in after this we had a raccon sitting and watching the chickens they were about grown my husband chased it off but no more problems I think if you have trouble get some hog wire and I bet nothing will get in. I told the owner and my husband plays card with this guy that if the dog digs under the dog is going to be shot dead now he says do what you have to do not that he thought it was wrong. When I talked to him first he said about our dogs running I said if one of out dogs was killing or hurt one of your animals then I would think you would shoot it it is in your right to protect your animals just bring the body to me no qeustions.

We don't have a lot of wild animals around where I live and so far all has been well the two cornish lived and they are the two I talk of with having problems and limping. The limping was not from the dog attack they were around 5 or 6 months old and when the attack happens they still was in fuzz.
