Yesterday I made a very difficult decision to open up an egg and hatch it myself. This chick should of hatched 3 days prior and when I took it out, the egg beak was worn down. I guess the shell was too thick. I had to saw through with a knife to get to the membrane.
This is my first hatch and I'm very inexperienced. I heard the chick peeping for two and a half days and it stopped. Once I finally got through the shell, the chick was 1/2 shrink wrapped and would of suffocated. It was very weak coming out, but I am not giving up as long as they put up a fight.
This is my emergency incubator, which worked okay for the end. My broody was eating the chicks and ate one full live chick. I took the eggs from her.
The chick obviously has some damage to the foot and legs. When it dried off, it was walking on it's hocks. I immediately gave it a drop of polyvisol vitamins.
This morning I woke up and took the chick out of the homemade incubator and into the brooder with the other two siblings. Later I checked and was going to massage the legs and I saw the chick standing at the food bowl eating!!!
The chick is still weak, but has a fighting attitude. It will not let the others pick on or step it. It fights back! I can put the chick on the other end of the brooder and it will walk under the light. I gave another drop of vitamins this morning.
I wrapped the thigh in vetwrap and taped the one foot, so the middle toe does not curl.
This is an EE/BR mix.
