I have always loved chickens, since I was a little girl. I'm 65 now and my husband agreed I could get no more than 5 ...and 5 years ago I got 5 baby 3 day old Rhode Island Reds. Today I have only two left. Here's my situation. I want to get 5 more chicks but my next door neighbor hates them. My two Reds go over to visit her black lab everyday and she says they dig up her hostas. My question is this.....how do I discourage them from going to her house when they free range? I don't like to keep them in their run every day. I feel they need to explore and have fun. I respect my neighbors plants and don't want her to keep nagging me everyday! Is there something, a powder or something that I could buy her that she could put around her hostas to discourage my girls from eating her hostas? Thanks for your help.

Fence up your chickens. I free range my chickens too....on my fenced property.

I can understand why your neighbor hates your chickens. They can cause some serious yard damage.Keep your pets in your yard.Simple as that.

If you respected your neighbor & her plants there would be no issue. Your birds belong behind a fence on your property. Be a better neighbor-keep your birds out of your neighbors yard.

I agree with the first 2 post you need to show respect to your neighbors property put up a fence between your two property or only let them free range when your out there to keep them from your neighbors plants.

Your chickens' right to roam ends at your property line.

I love chickens, I am in the process of getting chickens, and I would be FURIOUS if a neighbor's chickens roamed onto my property and tore up my garden.

Your neighbor's yard is her own property and she has every right to tell you to keep you chickens on your own land.

Would you want a neighbor's dogs roaming on your property and eating your chickens? If she's an avid gardener she loves her hostas as much as you love your hens -- and those hostas are worth at least as much money.

Thank you one and all! I, too, am an avid gardener (in fact I'm the Vice President of our area Garden Club)! And from now on my chickens WILL STAY IN THEIR RUN. I guess I thought that if her Black Lab was able to poop in my yard every day that at least my chickens could roam a little. I WAS WRONG. I DO LOVE THIS SITE AND ONCE AGAIN, THANKS FOR SETTING ME STRAIGHT. Karenann

I was with everyone else about keeping the chickens in your yard until you just mentioned the neighbors dog pooping in yours! Now that you said that, encourage the chickens to roost on her car! HA!

Keep your chickens at home and tell her to stop letting her dog use your yard to do its business. I really don't see how she can be all that upset if she's basically doing the same thing (letting her animal wonder where it shouldn't). I'd be pelting that dog with rocks everytime I spotted it popping a squat in my yard! In fact, my neighbor has about 13 cats and I do pelt them with rocks, sticks and anything else I can get my hands on- they poo in my flower beds and mark my house and car. Just plain disrespectful.
Have a talk with your neighbor, at the very least, she should be bagging up the poop and taking it home to dispose of it :/

While I agree your girls need fenced, her dog needs to poo in their own yard. Maybe a small boundary fence between your property and hers could be put up.
