My neighbor is complaining about my rooster :/

Wendy'sChicksRock :

Someone just told me they use to cut the tail feathers off their roos to keep them quiet? Not sure if it would work or even if you would want to do it.I'm wondering if anyone else has ever herd of this option before? I had to re home my roo and now my Hen is crowing...I just can't win

No, my flock roosts inside a coop (see my page

) The problem is that this time of year I MUST open the windows for ventilation and for tempature control. I dont let my flock out until 8:21 am (I have an automatic door and I just confirmed the exact time it opens.

In that case, is there any way you can put the rooster in a cage or dog crate and bring keep him somewhere besides the coop for the night (a garage, storage building, or basement maybe)?

I could but is it really a long term solution? I got an automatic chicken door to simpify things.

If you want to keep your rooster, it might have to be a long term solution. It's nice to keep things simple when you can, but it doesn't always work out that way. Is your rooster worth it to you, to take those extra 5 minutes in the evening and in the morning to put him up and let him back out? Which is more important - keeping your rooster, or your convenience? Only you can answer that. Good relations with your neighbor are important. As others have mentioned, you wouldn't appreciate his little yappy dog keeping you awake all night, either. Maybe you can bring him a dozen eggs, apologize for the noise and let him know you're trying to work out a solution. And thank him for his patience.

It may only need to be a warm weather solution. If you keep the windows and things closed in the winter time, then the crowing may not be a problem then.

I hope you are able to resolve this issue. I have 2 roosters with a bunch of neighbors withing 400 feet of them. I do wake up in the night and have heard them crowing. No one has complained yet. Well not to me anyway.

Best advice I have read yet.

I have a roo who lost his tail feathers to a dog and he crows everytime I go outside.

I may have missed this but how long have you had this rooster? In all seriousness I have found that the crowing doesn't bother me as much as it did when I got my first roo(I wanted to strangle him for crowing then).

I agree

Ok everyone is trying to figure out what to do with the roo.....I say we put your neighbor in a crate and throw him in a shed so he doesn't hear the roo. Fact is you live in an area zoned for chickens, which means he also lives in an area zoned for chickens. If you don't want to hear roos in the morning I would think one would not move to an area zoned for chickens....Maybe I am insane but I think the problem is your neighbor is not as bright as we would all like him to be. Although I do agree with the egg giving and apology, however you really don't need to apologize as he is the big dummy who moved into an area zoned for chickens. Hes kinda like the people that move next to a military air station and complain about helicopter and jet noise....Duh! Don't really feel sorry for him. Feel sorry for you having someone so stupid living near by....Hope all goes well.

So, if you and I were neighbors, and we lived next to each other in an area zoned for dogs and I got a little yappy dog (or better yet, two of them) and they barked every night at 2:30am and woke you up every night, it would be your problem and not mine. I wouldn't have to do what I need to do to keep the dogs quiet because our neighborhood is zoned for dogs. I wouldn't owe you an apology for the yapping and you should be expected to move to an area not zoned for dogs because you don't like being awakened in the middle of the night. I wouldn't have to apologize because you were stupid enough to move into an area zoned for dogs. Please tell me how this scenario would be any different from the OP's.
