My neighbor is complaining about my rooster :/

I'd go with darkening the coop as a first step. We had roos in a small coop right outside of our house and they were very attentive to light and motion. All that it took to set them off was to see a light go on in the house. And then see one of us walk around.

And my roos will sit on their roost and crow while stretching forward. One did it this morning in fact.

2 acres is not what I call the country. That is suburbia. I love rosters and their crows, but not in the middle of the night. I'd complain too if it woke me up. Sorry..

Someone just told me they use to cut the tail feathers off their roos to keep them quiet? Not sure if it would work or even if you would want to do it.I'm wondering if anyone else has ever herd of this option before? I had to re home my roo and now my Hen is crowing...I just can't win

Sound advice from a person who doesn't have to bear the consequences of royallying irritating a close neighbor. If someone did that to me because I made a legitimate complaint about disturbances at 2am, I'd be calling animal control by the hour.

I like the suggestions of using blackout curtains, insulation, or even taking the rooster inside the garage in a crate for the night. All of those satisfy both parties on both sides.

Sane. Sensible. and socially responsible.

Whatever you do, don't be insensitive to the neighbor by suggesting that the neighbor just deal with it or get a set of earplugs. Your neighbor isn't being irrational in expecting a decent night's sleep. Your rooster shouldn't be allowed to crow at 2 a.m. I hope the suggestions made by other BYC chickeners regarding the earplugs were in jest--it is EXTREMELY insensitive to suggest that a person change their lifestyle (and run the risk of fungal diseases in their ears) over a stupid rooster.

Getting rid of the rooster is ALWAYS an option. If you can't find a way to keep him quiet at night, then you should get rid of him. If the neighbor is serious enough your can find yourself facing a lawsuit.

I completely agree just like here I live in a place called Oak Hills the modo is fine country living, people move here wanting to be in the country and then they want it paved, then side walks then street lights and so on WHY MOVE TO THE COUNTRY TO TURN IT INTO THE CITY? it makes no sense to me, here we were allowed to have ALL farm animals now we cant have pigs because some people complained about them and the smell and made to many complaints now they are not allowed and soon im sure it will be the same with roosters and chickens their is no in between with some people and when they complain and complain and complain and you give in and try to appease THEM then they are happy and your miserable trying to do EVERY thing to keep them happy you give them an inch and they take 100 miles

that's how it is with my neighbors I was here first with my animals now people move in and complain (im sure you have all heard of my battle with my drunken neighbor) my roos don't crow at night they start crowing at 6:00 every morning like every other roo in the neighborhood and they crow during the day she stood out at the fence that divides our property's today drunk screaming at the roosters shaking the fence telling them to shut up and every one who has had roosters knows when you do something like that it upsets them and they crow more there quiet at night but she doesn't want them crowing at all and I'm sure within the next 2 weeks animal control will be here for the 5 millionth time because of her

OP you do your best to keep your roo quiet but please remember GETTING RID OF HIM is NOT an option hes your pet you love him he loves you im sure and it would be a real shame to have to give him up because of a jerk of a neighbor

No, my flock roosts inside a coop (see my page

) The problem is that this time of year I MUST open the windows for ventilation and for tempature control. I dont let my flock out until 8:21 am (I have an automatic door and I just confirmed the exact time it opens.

Well, Thank you for all of your advice. I never dreamed that so many of you would try to help me out. I am VERY torn. I do value a good relationship with my neighbors. I do love my little man. I have covered the window that he roosts in front of. I have turned off my light. Yet he has crowed two more times (One at 1:30am & One night at 2:30am) since my original post.

I am willing to consider re-homing him to a kind person that would NOT make him into stew. But that isn't as easy as it sounds. I am heart-sick over this! See this is why people say not to name your birds. I know that I should consider them as livestock but I am not so good at that. Some of my birds have made their way into my and my children's hearts.

I definately need to correct this. Thanks again to everyone!

In that case, is there any way you can put the rooster in a cage or dog crate and bring keep him somewhere besides the coop for the night (a garage, storage building, or basement maybe)?
