My neighbors are neglecting their chickens

This doesn't really make a lot of sense. The neighbors are paying you so they can keep their birds in your barn but yet they have an area where they keep their birds and you looked into the coop (more like a pen rather than a coop), and counted 6 out of 7 chickens and yet they haven't been outside in 3 weeks, and the door to their pen is sometimes carelessly latched, allowing them to escape at night when coyotes are out. Can you post some pictures of the setup?

Yes, pictures of the set up would help! I was imagining a large barn set up for horses, as you mentioned you have a horse, with converted stalls that are being used for the chickens? Then there would be a possible exterior door as well as interior one?

I agree you should take them. They sound like the type of people who will abandon the animals when they move anyway.

They are your responsibility if they are on your property.. Hate to tell you.. I would watch any animals on my land..

So, littlepip, did you contact the owners of the chickens/rabbit? Is something going on in their family that caused them to neglect the animals? It's possible, life happens I know that. Have there been any changes? Are you going to keep them now? Or are they moving and taking them. Please update us!!

Don't call animal control! I honestly don't trust them with any animal. Waiting for an update.

they are in the process of moving. They plan on taking their animals, and hopefully the reason for neglect is simply the stress. This doesn't make it any more acceptable, but at least there is a reason.
