I agree with Marlinchaser, you should either lower the board on the front of the box or raise the lip on the front of the trough.

I was worried about them billing out the feed (they do it a lot) so I made the front board pretty low and the hole where the feed comes through is pretty tight. I was afraid I made tit too restrictive for my girls, but noticed that they are really good at getting their heads in there to peck at pellets which helps the pellets to drop and feed into the trough.

Except for the fact that they throw a little feed out, I love it!!! I wouldn't change much about it. Also the chickens love it. It was their early christmas present. Lol.

You could also staple a strip of welded wire fencing across the feeder trough to prevent the flicking. I did this with my trough feeder and it eliminated all flicking and waste! The 2 x 3 in. spacing just allows the hens to get a mouthful but not flick around in the feed.

he was holding the couch down for most of the day today.

how many chickens do you have? Just wonderin how many it takes to eat 40 lbs. of feed. I have 15 and it takes them about a month, a little less actually.

total feathered fiends - 30, that includes ducks and guinea's. (I think I was feeding something else a while ago - the 22 pound feeder I have was being filled every two days!!! Now I top it up now and then.

Winter time they eat ALOT of feed, summer it lasts a LOT longer.

40 lbs a week, sounds like you need more chickens, I thought the reason for being able to hold 50 lb bag was so you only have to fill 2 times a week.
