You did mention that you didn't quarantine him because he was in the same shipment of chicks, and because you asked, thought I'd answer: Doesn't matter where he came from--if he was at a different location growing up, then he could have contracted anything there. You need to read up on chickens diseases like Coryza, Infectious Bronchitis, Chronic Respiratory Disease (CRD), etc. Even a chick can contract a disease that will infect other birds.
If a bird leaves my property, it is never allowed to return for any reason because the moment it is in someone else's cage, coop, or pen, it can catch something that will decimate my flock if that bird returns. It's always best to be super cautious!
