This is true but it was a great work out for my 2 DS I was able to afford the using recycled flooring I wanted so it was worth it. My DH even reused about 90% of the nails from the pallets on the coop. I am raising my chicks in this year and we got pretty cold for a week after I go them and with the heat lamp it was nice and warm in the coop and had great ventilation so I think it will work great for my girls.

Thanks I had to if I wanted the recycled flooring. I love the fact we had most of this stuff on hand. Now to build the new pen.

Thank you for posting this..even starting with the chickens was a huge leap of faith since we made a long distance move that really drained us..but this was so important to the boys. I found a huge stack of palets behind the garage and we too plan on using them in some way...now I need hardware cloth..rolls and rolls of FREE hardware cloth! LOL

Now that's my idea of what a coop should be.

I'm interested in the "recycled flooring" can you post info about it or maybe a link to the product?

It is made for using on porches and decking it is made out of wood pulp and recycled plastic jugs I know lowes carries it. I love the fact that it never rots, termite can't eat it. Here is a link about a company that makes it. Now it is more expensive then the wood but I think it was worth it.

Here is what it looks like when we put it down the blue/grey boards Hope this helps.

I used welded wire for most of my pen then used hardware cloth for about 2 feet at the bottom of the pen and on any ventilation holes in the coop. It is a little cheaper and since I have mine covered in welded wire I don't worry about anything getting in. Might be a bit cheaper also. I would also check out yahoo they have a group called free cycle might find a bunch of stuff free that way I did. Now to build a play house for the grand kids so they quit using my new coop as a play house. When I first had chickens I used an old big dog house for a coop. maybe check into that you would be amazed how easy adding some nest boxes (old milk crates cut at an angle) and a couple of board for roost and the have a coop it has worked so far, we are waiting to move them to the new coop when we get our new run built. I can post some pictures if you want. Feel free to PM me if you have an questions.

I love to recycle and since money was really tight due to DH losing his job we had to make every penny count so I spent money on what was most important the floor frame and the flooring the rest is recycled wood. I love the way DH made it no plan except in his head. DH is so great he builds what I need and makes it work for me. He also made the storage area to get my chicken stuff out of HIS tool shed.
