My Peafowl Pictures

I am already seeing some eye feathers on my two year old and my four year old has a good start on his new train too.

Thanks Deerman for the information on what to look for on pied chicks for white in the tail. I'll look at the 3 I have tomorrow. I think most of the white is in the wings, face and neck. One has some at the very top of the wings if I remember right. My pied from last year has a white patch in the center of the base of train when he fans. That's the only time I can see it. Haven't paid much attention but other feathers must cover it when he's not fanning. I want a peacock with white in it's train so bad but some of my birds are precious pets and I'd never send them away to make room for others. Only having 5 acres so I need to keep the numbers down. Already have too many....need to catch 6 IB chicks free ranging with their mom's but going to break my heart to take them away. The peahens are such good mothers and will fret loosing their babies. LOL, not sure if I can do it. When does a mother quit paying attention to her chicks? Maybe I can catch them then. I'm trying to not get attached.

I absolutely love all these pictures posted. Thanks everyone for sharing. I want to add on to our 30' by 30' pen that devides into 3 - 10' by 30'. I'm thinking a large aviary on the end without the sheds and I want to attach a building for chicks. I was thinking no floor...just build it on the ground and extend hardware cloth on the outside around it to keep out predators. I have a 4' by 6' with 6' height cage I can put inside and maybe could add onto it. Would it be better to have a floor with them just loose in there and use bedding material? How on earth would I keep the floor clean unless it was concrete? So much to figure out. I love having peafowl and even tho I don't want between 40 and 50 chicks like I had this year I will always want a few. They are a delight to me.

There are a lot of peafowl pictures that are inspiring, especially on Flickr (a photography website). I have seen really pretty pictures of peacocks in trees or in a tropical scene and it makes me wish I could make a little tropical paradise for them.

Here is Alto showing off! I am enjoying his displays more since his tail isn't all brown anymore. The bit of green he has makes it more impressive. I can't wait for him to get his first eye feather!

This is Alto's backplate (the scale-like feathers on his back) it is getting really pretty and is getting greener all the time.

Compare Alto's backplate with my three year old male Dragon's backplate and you can tell that Alto still has to get more color before he has a true adult backplate.

Here is his train growing back in after he shed it. It is quickly growing out for next breeding season.

Here is Damsel!

Damsel is eating some of the treats I brought today which are colar greens, grapes, apple slices, plum, green pepper, dogfood, and their regular food sunflower seeds.

This is what the birds do when they see a hawk. They tilt their head looking up at the sky and stand there sometimes making little sqeaking noises. If you follow their gaze, you can easily spot the hawk.

Wow! just looked at these pictures again and I'm amazed at how good they are. What were they taken with folks? They're so clear and sharp.

Deerman, I'm pretty sure I've read you are ill. If so my prayers are with you. How are you doing?
