Martha,
Weevils will eat the 'germ' of the seed, which is the middle part where the nutrition packs the biggest wallop.

If the weevils are really numerous, then they may have been reproducing in the food. Not good. The bugs may be nice as protein, but the food isn't.

I was shocked to purchase my second 25# bag of feed, and found tell-tale signs (the pieces of web like stuff on the inside of the bag) of weevils. I haven't actually seen the bugs themselves, just the signs of them being there. Wasn't very happy about that! When I spoke with another feed store, the gal told me it's not unusual to have bugs in the poultry feed.

Think I'll visit another store and ask about this again.

ew, i wouldn't buy grain with them! whether it's usual or unusual, it shouldn't be accepted as normal! one of the hallmarks of good quality, fresh grain is absence of infestation.

had a pretty good experience with MPC.... My order arrived from Ideal.

that's interesting! everything i'd seen on here indicated a partnership with meyer exclusively (especially since their small order program is identical to meyer's), but it's good to know that there's some variety in suppliers.

for the few people who don't recommend or wouldn't do business with MPC, perhaps it would be helpful to the OP to know your reasons.

On the MPC web site, on each breeds ordering page, the hatcheries who supply that breed are noted; the last time I looked they had drop ship arrangments with maybe 6-7? All are familiar names here on on BYC.

Our chicks were shipped frorm Mansfield, Ohio according to the stamp on the box, even though the return addrtess was for MPC on the east coast. New Jersey I think, but don't quote me because I threw the box out weeks ago.

Just to to satisfy my curiosity - doe anyone know what hatchery is closest to Mansfield Ohio?

I ordered through Ideal, who doesnt have a minimum chick order, but a minimum $ order of $20.
I met that easily by ordering chicks AND a Ideal t shirt.

I was looking at MPC but found the cost a bit high for my wallet. Although if I wanted sexed banties I may have gone with them.

I just wanted to weigh in because I considered ordering from MPC but found that Ideal Poultry also allowed me to order just a few chicks, charges a lot less for small orders, and Ideal had more variety available and I got the chicks at my post office at 6:30am the day after they hatched and they are healthy and lovely. Ideal did make a mistake on my order and shorted me two golden-laced wyandottes, but they offerred to send out replacements immedietly - but I didn't want more male "packing peanuts" to re-home - so I just made due without them. So, if you want to place a small order, I recommend Ideal.

I ordered from from them.

Negatives- they lost the original order which had been placed months before. I had a brief period of panic when the chicks didn't show up when promised. Their customer service people were really nice and finally fessed up that they hadn't actually shipped them. They reshipped two weeks later. I was a smidge cranky because it threw off my timing and well laid plans. They also didn't always answer emails promptly.

Positives-
-I ordered 15 chicks and they actually sent 18. Two were a breed I had asked for after my initial order that weren't available and 1 was a polish packing peanut. The polish got smushed in delivery and died moments after opening the box. The remaining 17 have thrived! And the two bonus mille fleurs they sent have turned into my favorites!
- All seem healthy and personable.
- All are beautiful (check out my blog for tons of photos from start to present!)
- I ordered from MPC so I could get sexed bantums. So far one of the bonus chicks has turned out to be a rooster. He's adorable and I'm so hooked! One of the buffs has turned into a rooster as well. So two of the 17 are roosters. I'm pretty sure that's within the promised range. And all three of the bantums I actually ordered are girls.
-the customer service girls were as nice as could be.

Conclusion- they are pricier, but it's worth it if you want sexed bantums. The chicks they send are beautiful and healthy. After my initial frustration I've been pretty happy.

Good luck!

Well, I just got notification from them about when my chicks would be going out. I was hoping for a specific day so I could take some time off work to be home. I guess since I live in a small town, I can give my post office a heads up and hope they catch them and hold them for me?

Thanks for your purchase of baby chicks with My Pet Chicken! Your chicks will ship out via Express Mail the week of September 2nd and could arrive any day that week from Wednesday through Friday, depending on how the Post Office services your area. Please note that you will NOT receive a tracking number nor a confirmation that your chicks have shipped. This letter is your official notification. The Post Office will usually call you to notify you that your chicks have finally arrived, but every post office is different, so keep reading to find out how to best handle receiving your live baby chicks through the mail.

I ordered 27 chickens from MPC and I'm very happy with how it all turned out. My emails were responded to quickly and courteously. My chickens were healthy and arrived on time.

I looked at a LOT of different websites while I was deciding and I thought MPC's was handsdown the easiest and nicest to order from.

I ordered 5 girls, each of a different breed, from MPC. I had a bit of a wait for my order to be shipped, apparently a lot of people have decided to raise their own chickens this year. My box arrived at the post office when promised and all 5 were happy and healthy. They are 8 weeks old now and doing fine.

Sure there is no harm in gving the Post Office a call a day or so after the ship date. We did that because ours were shipped to the main post office in Cambridge, MA (not exactly a rural area) and much to my surprise the nice woman who answered the phone knew all about chickens coming through the Post Office. In fact her first comment was "Oh sure, I just had a batch last week. We get baby chicks on a regular basis".

Who knew? They called my husband at work the next day and he went over to get them.
