All I can say is that I wish there was a hatchery in this country where I could order chicks from - you gotta know somebody whose got some or tough luck. I thought the letter was downright fabulous. Oh for a hatchery with a catalogue....

As I said before, I would have no problem with the lack of chicks (I didn't when Ideal called me) it is the message that would be the problem. They aren't your buddy, they are a business. That message was not even remotely professional. Since they are dealing with large numbers of people from all different backgrounds, cultures, etc. they would be safer sticking to a professional, apologetic message. Imagine how an old time farmer, patiently waiting for chicks, would take that. Some teenage girl, thinking her chicks were supposed to look cool, might like it. I think most people would simply be offended.

I think it is a mistake to "read in" to any form of written communication. My reaction would have been disappointment. But calling them unprofessional? SOunded to me like they were trying to be friendly and let someone down easy. Of course, I come from a more laid-back community where a very formal, sterile letter would be looked at as "stuffy" and cold.

I try to look at intent when I am unsure about something I read or hear. Hard to do sometimes, but where they trying to be rude? Snotty? Uhhh...no.

As for most people being offended, that doesn't appear to be the case in this thread. Some, sure. But most?

So if a hatchery tries to be personable, they're snippy and snide. And people complain.

However, if a less personable letter were sent out, people would complain and say that the company didn't care.

This company is inundated with calls and e-mails every day with people asking for advice about how to care for their chickens. They also go out of their way to satisfy every customer because they know that two people will come on a board such as this and run the company down.

They are a small company that goes out of their way to find chickens and products for their customers if they do not carry them. OR refer them to other places that could possible help them better.

Most of their customers are first time chicken owners that need extra guidance. Most of their customers also order at least 3 different varieties of chickens. Some, try and order every breed that is offered. That takes ALOT of time to do, trying to choreograph which breeds hatch on which week and when they all can go out at the same time. This puts the ship dates pretty far out. Yet people complain.
