My poor chickies

2 days ago some dogs from a few miles down the road found their way onto our property while we were gone and killed most of our flock. We had about 20 birds out in the yard and are now down to 6 such an upsetting scene to come home to. Luckily they didn't find their way into the garage and get the 13 chicks in there before we got home and got the situation under control. The traumatized chickens are laying eggs again and starting to wander the yard again, they look. We checked them all over and noticed that a few had tail feathers pulled out but didn't see any bite marks. Today we noticed one of our hens appears to have a puncture on her rear end. Is there something we should be putting on it to avoid infection? Her butt feathers looked stringy and dirty to me today and a yellow yolk like liquid? Was on her rear, my husband thought it was maybe a broken egg?
We are new to the bird world. This is our first season of adult chickens and neither of us grew up with livestock, so any advice is very helpful. We want to do what's best for her

i would put a mixture of peroxide and blu-kote you can get some on amazon, should heal the wound

I would scrub the wound daily with either betadine or diluted gentle iodine; dab dry and then pack it well with original neosporin until signs of healing. I tend to leave wounds (especially puncture wounds) open to the air (no wrapping). If it's hot where you are and you're worried about flies, you can put some swat over the packed wound; blue kote works well too if the other chickens are pecking at her wound.

I have a bird that was attacked by a fox approx 4-5 weeks ago and had some pretty serious wounds. I separated her and scrubbed and soaked and packed the wounds daily. She's since grown all her feathers in; is back with her flock and her wounds have healed over nicely. It's amazing how fast she healed.

I'm so sorry for your loss. Hopefully the owners of the dogs have made some sort of restitution.

My new favorite product is Vetericyn. I had a juvenile chicken with a BAD eye infection. I tried Neosporin with no success. The eye eventually looked like there was a marble in it. I sprayed this stuff on and within minutes puss began running out. This happened every time I sprayed it. I've used it for a week and now all of the swelling and infection appears to be gone. I'm sure it will be blind because it took me too long to find this product. The stuff is a little costly, cost me $25. I really didn't want to spend that much on one bird, but I thought it would be a good experiment and I would have the product for later if needed. It can be used on all animal wounds and it sprays on like water. I got mine at the Co-op, but I'm sure you can find it easily. I couldn't remember the spelling so I searched for it and its all over the internet. If you use it, let us know how it worked.

Looks like there are multiple versions of the stuff, what I used is Vetericyn VF Wound and Infection Treatment.
