My poor Kitty :( What could have done this? *GRAPHIC PICS*

"Big" kinda indicates coyote.
Whatever it was I think your cat used up the rest of it's 9 lives.

Imp-very lucky cat

Not sure if you have Raccoons in your neck of the woods but here in the Pacific Northwest, they started attacking cats the last couple of years. I have a close friend who lost a cat to a Raccoon. Just a thought. Sorry about your kitty. : (

I am so sorry for poor Sam and for you - looks like it was a nasty fight he got into. While it could have been many of the predators you listed, I would lean towards the dog family culprits - mainly dogs and coyotes. Whatever it was grabbed him from behind and likely dragged him as you mentioned so it had to be a larger animal and the backside injury is classic for canine attacks on cats. I suppose a great horned owl is a possibility too though taking a full grown large cat is not common (though not unheard of). Can't completely rule out another cat, although cat fights tend to cause head, face and ear injuries (obvious scratches, maybe a bite on an ear, leg or foot, but rarely a tearing, gaping hole). And some of the other "predators" you listed really are not predators for cats - I have seen plenty of cats eating out of the same food dish as a possum and have seen cats in the yard with skunks and raccoons - possums, skunks and coons just don't seem to look at cats as prey although if one were sick (rabies), it might attack. Same goes for foxes too - cats and foxes tend to be similar enough in size that they are more competitors for food than predator/prey towards each other. We had a fox that took up with our barn cats during the fox's declining years and they all got along fine. Long story short, I would lean towards dog or coyote. Whatever it was, best wishes to Sam on a speedy recovery.

Imp I am afraid I agree with ya on that one!

Hmmcc yep lots of coons around here, lunkers too but unless that stinker had a jaw like steven tyler im still thinkin bigger. My cats have always tangled with the coons, heck one of them dragged a dead coon home and ate it right in front of me, but I have never seen puncture wounds this big from a coon attack.

Thank you all for the well wishes, I will do everything in my power to help him mend and make sure the wounds are cleaned often with the solution the vet gave me to mix up.

LOL! And I thought I had country kitties! I have had some big strapping barn cats but not a single one has ever tangled with a coon much less brought a dead one home and ate it! Our dogs do that, but not the cats.

The green on his face reminds of paint ball gun pellet colorations?? They will leave a stain and they will smash into skin like that! I've heard of some nasty kids and teens doing things like that out of FUN! The open wounds could be from the paintball at a close range hit breaking skin open like that. I have been hit with those horrible stingers and Have bleed-bruised and limped for days due to them:( I hope he heals very quickly

LOL yep he was one tough cat! He took down large dogs just for sport, they wouldn't see it coming when he got up on his back legs walking towards them doing the pinwheel with his front claws to their faces. He was NUTS when it came to taking down another animal, if it woulda been that cat outside he would have taken that thing down too! However he is no longer with us... R.I.P Spike He lived a long life, hopefully sam will too

He is an intrepid fellow! Last November my cat got mauled right at the base of her tail and she was so skittish afterwards. It would take her about 5 minutes to get out the door - sniffing, listening, crouching. Then, she'd book out the door and up the nearest tree, where she would have to scan the area AGAIN for another ten minutes. I was afraid she had PTSD!

I think sam thought if he headed back out the door he could "finish it off" or something. I opened the door to grab the phone off the patio and he ran right for it hissing and growling and thats just not him. He is such a snuggle bug any other day but now I fear he is out for blood. It's gonna be a challenge to break him of his outdoor time but my gosh after alll is gonna be said and done at 2 yrs of age I have $800 into him so far (thats not just from todays incident but everything like neuter, declaw, vaccinations), if amputation is necessary well,

that will be a huge chunk of change I won't be able to afford and he will probably wind up in the pet cemetary with the other critters we have lost unless by chance I win the lotto, if thats the case he will be sporting a fancy prosthetic (sp) leg. I am pretty confident at this point that he will heal in time with the proper care in which he will recieve.
