My poor Kitty :( What could have done this? *GRAPHIC PICS*

OMG, that's a terrible place to be bitten. I'm thinking a dog or raccoon. I don't know. He's very lucky to be alive.

Looks like a coyote or dog. What ever it was got a face full of claws when it latched on. A dog or coyote chasing something bites at it a coon or other cats chase someting they swat at it to nock it down. The marks on his rear look like teeth marks from a dog or coyote. One lucky cat.

There are plenty of large dogs around here but at night they too are locked up in their houses, if it was a coyote I fear for my birds now....

2 things I would comment on.

1.....i have seen tiny wounds that open up like that on animals (maybe evolution keeping them cleaned out?) my dog has a tiny puncture wound the size of a pen maybe that open up to the size of a quarter in 12 hours. It healed fine.

2. My cat has come home looking like that if not worse from a cat fight. If they really get into they can tear each other apart and they def will go for an a** end attack. Dogs will fight each other the same way sometimes..

Anyway I am sure your cat will be fine and back at it soon. I have a 7 lb cat that has 3 legs now due an accident. We could not keep him in if we wanted. He is a cat. Hunting, chasing, ocassionally fighting is what he wants from life. I personally would feel much better about a cat or any animal if I allow it to live the life it wants to as much as possible. After watching a cat become depressed from being kept inside I have come to terms with the cycle of life with my animals. if my cat dies or disappears at age 9 I will be sad and upset but I will know I did the right thing by him and let him be happy. I could lock him inside for 20 years but it would be 20 of unhappiness.

Hope he recovers soon

I can't afford to keep taking him to the vet if this keeps happening when I let him out. Believe me the last thing I want to do is take his freedom and life away but I can't afford to loose my house over it because I chose to let him live like he has been. Him and I have been working with the chickens for 2 years now, starting from the time he was just 5 weeks old. He is used to hanging out with the flock on a daily basis rain or shine, even more reason to want to shelter him from potential infections he could get from rolling around in chicken poop. For now he is grounded for at least 2 weeks and it will be baby steps after that to see how he is gonna react and depending on how he is healing. I don't believe he would have let another cat do this to him, I truely think this was a canine of some sort. When I was paying the bill at the vet there was a standard poodle in the waiting room and sam was in his crate freaking out thrashing about at the sight of that dog, he had never acted that way before.

Gosh, just read that he was declawed, makes it even more amazing.

I have forced a couple cats inside they will get used to it, and stop trying to go out. They start getting fat & lazy, and like it.

DH has worked with them before so has seen tallen injuries before.

Oesdog - hope the cat gets better soon.

Indeed Imp, Indeed

Ty oesdog I have been informed via the neighbors that it was more then likely a mastiff that has been running loose sneaking around in the wooded area behind our backyard fence where sam frequently hangs out. I didn't think hawks hunted in the middle of the night. There are 2 puncture wounds under and at the back of his leg from the canines lower jaw sinkin in then the 2 puncture wounds close to his spine from the top jaw. Musta been some strong pain meds they gave him because he is acting like there is nothing wrong with him which is proving to be a challenge as far as keeping him somewhat immobile. He is a very lucky cat. Altho he still has back claws we declawed his front because he shredded the furniture despite our efforts of breaking that habit.

Okay...that looks like the talons of a large owl...if it were canine, there would be opposing punctures, at least one on the other side of the cat. Secondly, a canine would have carried him without dragging him in the grass.

Owls have feathers that make them silent when they dive and glide...they grab from behind with the talons and keep going. I have seen owls grab and successfully carry for a short distance, cats, rabbits and small dogs. I actually grabbed my mother's dachshund out of the talons of a great horned owl in her front yard one night. They hook their large center talon in and curl the foot to hold so usually you see just 2 punctures. Most likely Sam struggled and caused the owl to try to regain its grip and it could not stay aloft with the cat and Sam slipped away...hence the tearing of the wound. His weight and the nature of an owl attack explains the green stains...Owls strike from just barely above their target and in a forward motion...Sam would have been hit and dragged a few feet while the owl tried for lift carrying his weight.

There is not much you can do to stop that predator...they are Federally Protected, danged near impossible to ward against and they are silent and smart. Good luck with Sam, but I bet if the wounds were cleaned thoroughly and kept clean, he will be fine.
