My rabbits had babies… what now?

Okay. The male won’t be let out then and I made it so they can see each other better through the bars of the hutch. I think that will make him feel better.

I checked the old nest, in the chicken coop, and found this. View attachment 2961343
New straw has been added to it. Before it was just the fur.
The babies are spending most of their time in a hole in the ground. Really only coming out to eat and drink. I’m thinking of putting wire or a cage over it so they’ll be separate from the mother. Will that be okay or should I remove them from the run totally?
Don't separate them from their mother. They need her for to to 7 weeks. I have a 7 week old who still nurses from time to time. It is how they get their right antibodies and prebiotic and such to stay healthy.

Wait… what? If I were to let the male out now for a short period of time but then keep him away after his surgery, I’m not doing this but considered it, she could get pregnant right away even tho she’s probably pregnant now and the male isn’t near her after she gives birth?? I’d keep the male away until hes sterile, I plan on doing that anyway, but what?
I will try to clarify things. She is not likely to get pregnant again since she is already pregnant. However, if the buck is there when she kindles he will breed her and she will most likely take. Bear in mind that just because the testicles are removed it does not mean the buck is immediately sterile. He won't be making any more sperm, but there are live sperm in the ducts. It isn't until those are gone that he can no longer impregnate a female. Clear as mud?

If a doe has a new litter she should NOT be nursing the older litter. The older litter will take the milk needed for the new ones. As long as they are eating pellets they can be separated. If you are worried about it mix a little powdered milk in with their pellets.

My does have no issues with nursing more than the current litter. All our babies have been healthy and well fed. They also don't just nurse their own. We have two mommas who are sisters and they will let whichever baby who wants to nurse when it is dinner time. We let them naturally ween themselves. But you definitely don't want to separate early as then you have health issues.

Even if she has another litter? Still keep them together?
Keep the boy separate from the girl. But don't separate the babies until about 7 weeks. It is actually illegal in my state to sell bunnies until they are 7 weeks due to this (much like kittens and puppies). If you keep the papa bunny away from momma she should've be getting pregnant to have another litter. But if she is already pregnant, my does do fine with 2 litters at a time because the older litter are in the processing of weaning themselves by the time the new litter is born.

Have you considered eating rabbit meat? (One way of dealing with all the bunnies.)
My husband has. I cant process them. Not just because I don’t have the gal to but because it’s illegal in my village to process animals. I’m going to try and sell some first. If they don’t all sell then I’ll find a butcher.
Oof!
Any pics of the newborns?
No. I wanted to get a look at them but it was windy when I opened the coop. I started moving all the fluff on top of them but thought they might get cold. I mostly wanted to see if they were alive. They were because the fluff started moving around. It’s supposed to be warm tomorrow, in the 30s, so I might be able to get pics then.

The male was all happy and fine until she had babies. He’s a freaking Houdini. He manages to get out of the hutch and close the door behind him. I swear he just bumps it with his nose until the latch pops off.
