My Roo is dead ( stupid neighbor dog)

I did just have this problem to. I made a post on it. We finally had to resort to shooting our nieghbors dog. Sometimes you have to do tghis. This dog of ours always tore up our chickens. We tried everything from, b.b guns, to electric fence. The darn thing didnt ever get fazed a bit. We finally had to get out the video cam. and dropped him right inside our chicken run. We had the proof on tape and the nieghbors got a hefty fine. personally I would rather risk loosing a friendly nieghbor ( who probably isnt a good nieghbor to begin with.)
over loosing all my chickens. It never fails that they kill your favorites, and much needed chickens. I say up grade from the B.B guns. and stop the dog for good. Its sad, but most of the time its really the only thing you can do with out loosing a bunch more chickens. Your nieghbor probably never thinks twice about what their dog has done. You need to make it clear that your chickens arent chew toys.

I'm sorry to hear of the loss of your birds. How about getting a great pyrneese pup of your own. I hear they will bond to your birds and kill any neighbor strays that enter into your property. They will tolerate other animals until they pose a threat on their flock thay they are there to protect. I have chickens and sheep and am thinking of getting one myself. Just a thought.

We have the electric shock fence around our bird's run and the neighbors dog tried to get in. He ran like the dickens after getting shocked just once and we never had a problem with him since.

We also use bottle rockets to keep him at bay, our yards are so close.
The chicks dont seem to care about the "boom", but the neighbors dog runs to home quickly.

I saved my rode island "Mimee" from the jaws of this dog and I grabbed the dog and told him, "NO!" "Thats BAD!" He growled at me and I stood my ground. Mimee is my fav. chicken always and forever. She hid untill my hubby rescued her from under a bush. we work with our neighbors to keep our chicks from being a dog treat. Dogs cant help their nature, once they taste chicken. Its too late to train them any other way. Ive been on both sides of the fence.

Guess who is at my fence first thing this morning...the stupid neighbor's dog. Yeah they really care that there dog is killing my chickens. I am calling animal control to report the dog and owners and ask what my rights are here in Arizona as far as protecting my livestock. I have no faith that animal control will do anything to them but I have no other option now.

I only have to ideas as to what to do with this. One you can let shoot the dog. Though it may not be something that you want to do, you still would be right in protecting you livestock. If you feel it will end with you in court, video tape the shooting so that you can show the proof that the dog was after your chickens. You could probably easily get away with the three S's. Shoot, shovel, and shut up. It a lot of cases this would be doing the dog a favor. It is only a matter of time before it gets hit by a car, or gets poisoned either accidently or on propuse, people who dont have dog or other animals may not think twice about leaving chemicals out, or use chemicals in their gardens. My second thought was when the dog comes back, if it is friendly enough get it and then hual it into town to the pound say you saw it wandering alone somewhere inside city limits. Or you could lie say it is your dog and that you cant keep it for what ever reason you think of. If you say it was your dog you will probably have to pay them to take it, but if you do this they will auomactically put it up for adoption istead of holding it for what ever standard amount of time they feel is best. You will also have to make sure you get the collar off, and maybe throw another one of a different collar around the dogs neck. When we were pet sitting here this last spring for my in laws their dog jumped our fence and ran off. The pound did get the dog but if it werent for me remembering the color of the collar, they wouldnt have gave us the dog back. It is something that animal control officers use to make sure that it is infact the owners of the dog and not some one who came in saw the dog and wanted it but didnt want to pay the full cost of adopting the dog. Anyway you dont have many options, your nieghbors are already ticked at you for trying to make them pay the damages the dog has already done. I dont think they would be making sure to bring you fresh baked goods, or what ever else a friendly nieghbor might do. The dog has already tasted blood, and no matter how friendly he might be towards anything else he sees your chickens as lunch now. He will keep it up until he eats the rest of your birds. him leaving one way or another is whats going to be what protects the rest of your flock. Oh ya I for got you might ought to think about taking the dog to the next towns animal shelter so the chances are even smaller that fido will be back in your coop.
