My rooster attacked a hawk!

I think this hawk was not quite half as big as my roo. The roo is a little smaller than the EE's. We have quite a few hawks here and lots of red tails that are even larger than a coopers but I have not lost any chickens to them. I don't free range chicks though. I have read on this site that plenty of people have lost their chickens to hawks. My friend says two roosters is even better than one for protection. I think I'll raise up a young one to help dad!

i second that!!!

Ha! I have some of his babies and maybe I'll keep a cockerel and see if he passes all his good traits on. All of his eggs are fertile but I've had him for about 8 months and I have only seen him on a hen 3 times. The ladies really appreciate his gentle care and he ignores humans. I can't tollerate a roo that attacks me!

I was the same way! I went without a roo for 40 years because I thought they were all horrible! I have had four this year (3 were silkies) and they have all been good with people. One of the silkies was not a gentleman with the ladies though.

Nice rooster! I had a big female redtail hawk land about 5 feet in front of one of my chickens last week, it ran toward my bird and had its talons in front of it just inches away from the startled hen, just then I ran out the back door and screamed right at the hawk as loud as I could, well it must have scared the hawk cause it fell right over like a sack of potatoes luckily for the chicken it flew off after that. Ive had problems with owls in the morning also I think cause of the drought here in Texas the wildlife is extra hungry this year.

I have had terrible problems with owls picking off my pigeons in the night. I never see them in the day time.

My amaricana cross roo survived a dog attack and came back with no tail or but feathers, and a brocken leg. It survived, and in 3 weeks it was back to jumping chickens. I did not bring him to a vet or anything he was just a very strong rooster. Sadly the rooster at 2 years old must have died from a heart attack.

What a wonderful and brave rooster!! definitely a keeper.

Unfortunately my brave roo did not fare as well in his encounter with a large hawk. He died trying though....and saved those he loved.

I've lost 2 roosters the same way. Gave their lives to protect the flock. One was a yard bantam roo (might have been a poorly bred OEGB) and one was an EE.
