Oh yea a big bowl of treats for him.Hope he scarred that hawk.Sorry to read of all the roos that died trying.

I will try to get a photo today. It is heart-breaking to hear about all the roosters that gave their lives.

I am sure mine wouldn't have fared so well against a red-tail. I recently let a broody hatch 4 of his eggs thinking I would keep a roo to help him in the fight. They are now two months old and it looks like I have all pullets! I guess he's a good producer as well! (Though actually I understand that the hen determines the sex in chickens.

Good boy doing his job. I've had hawks fly at my hens while I was standing next to them in a bright red bathrobe... the nerve. Earlier that year he had flown straight into the french doors with a headless chipmunk in hand and knocked himself straight out... not the brightest crayon in the box, but he managed to keep himself fed.

I found that my barred rocks did get "too big" for a hawk to pick one off and have never had a problem while free-ranging. They're pretty sharp girls and dive for cover whenever they find a need. They spent about 20 minutes "hiding" under landscaping flowers last time they saw a hawk.

Where does the barring come from in your Delaware x Red Leghorn? The Delaware?

I got the breeding wrong on that. The lady I got him from said it was a Danish brown leghorn but I don't think the barring would come from that either. I never gave it a thought till you brought it up. Hummmm.... anybody got a guess.
