I looked out my window way across the yard yesterday and saw an unidentified bird on the ground about 10 feet away from my 8 free ranging chickens (mostly EE's). The chickens were all in a huddle and suddenly one of the hens rushed at the bird and it flew up in the air a bit where I was able to identify it as a cooper's hawk. The hen immediately returned to the huddle as the hawk hovered about 15 - 20 feet in the air. Then the hawk dove on the chickens and my rooster (Delaware/red leghorn cross) leapt into the air about 5 or 6 ft. to meet the hawk feet first! The hawk flew off aways and did not return. I love that rooster!!
