My Rooster is attacking one of my hens!!

my dad wants to keep the roo and trade the hen. argh, he makes me insane sometimes. he has a big fenced in back yard but he won't let the chickens loose because he's worried about hawks. understandable but he's retired so he can watch them when they free range. oh well, it's his property so i have to respect that.

probably for the best. a hen that never wants to mate is going to have a hard time getting along with any rooster

I have a Rhode Island Red rooster in with my Barred Rock and RIR hens. he is a very gentle rooster but 1 of the Barred Rocks wasn't having any of him. She would run around with him holding on to the back of her neck! It took about 2 months for her to accept him and he was being a gentleman about it! I agree that the rroster, no matter how pretty he is, needs to go. Best of Luck.

i side with keeping the roo, who by his actions are proving he is a very good roo. he is trying to make his herd stronger by getting rid of the 1 hen causing the herd trouble as a whole. he probably jus as much a protecter too,, hens are easy to find,, a REAL roo is hard to find, specially when one doesnt understand what he is doing is his job.,, but.....i also LOVE drunkin roo on the grill ;)

just traded my barred rock for a young leghorn hen. the flock took to her pretty well with just a few pecking order scuffles, nothing major. the rooster seems to like her so far but only time will tell. i'm glad the barred rock got out of there before she got hurt.
