My rooster might not be the breed I thought I purchased...

Which, just to clarify, i'm 100% ok with because he's a very pretty bird and my favorite out of the whole flock. I just want to know what he is. I purchased him thinking I was getting a hen black australorp... low and behold I have a rooster. Again, not complaining because I love him. And now after being on here and seeing other people post pictures of their black australorp roosters i'm not so sure that's what he is. The hens look right but he looks way different.

Hmmm. I think maybe an Asian black or black copper Marans. That is if you got him from a feed store or hatchery. If he was from a back yard breeder, then probably mixed breed. He's pretty.

Okay, then Marans or Asian black. Check the bottoms of the feet. If they are white or pinkish white, Marans. If they are yellowish in that area, then probably Asian black.

They're pinkish. Good to know what he is. I wonder how he got mixed up like that.

It happens all too often at feed stores. Maybe he hopped into the wrong bin, or maybe he was moved there by accident. Marans are a good breed, though, so you are lucky.
