So my 8 month old hen Ruby is not doing so well. I had posted some info on her in another forum: chicken behaviors & egg laying b/c she was acting weird. Anywho, I thought I should post in sickness b/c that is really what she seems to be now.
Ruby seems fine one day & down the next. She isn't eating or drinking too much, was standing alone in the coop puffed up a little, tail down with her eyes slightly closed. I brought her in the house Sunday night to keep an eye on her. We got some vitamin supplements & dewormer yesterday. I decided to do the supplements instead of the wormer b/c all my other chickens are fine. She has not laid an egg since being inside & does not feel like she had any in there. I checked her for an egg everyday since Friday & haven't felt anything. Also, the days she looks bad she also looks jaundice. She is having normal white cap poops, although I haven't seen any of her poops today. I thought I saw some yellow mixed with white in her house this morning. I refreshed her food today & she was not interested. She had poop in her fur about her bottom this morning & I've cleaned her up. It was yellow & seemed kind of thick, had some white mixed in there. Didn't really feel like poop consistency, more like a mushy cooked yolk. :( Here is a picture of her from just about 20 mins ago. She has always had a peachy colored comb but she looks pale & jaundice to me. Would love some ideas as to what it might be. Any advice is welcome!

If you saw what looked like egg yolk coming out her bottom, I'd get that girl into a warm bath! The egg could have broken inside her, and you would then need to take the shell out. She might be able to pass something. Frankly I believe she should see a vet if she is a beloved pet and you want to spend the money if there is a broken egg in her.

I have no experience with eggbinding/eggbound hens, but here are some links:

Thanks guys! That is my concern too! I have read up on speckled hens links for the EYP & also checked an avian site too. I hope that isn't what this is. I'm worried if it broke days ago what will happen? I'll read these & do the warm bath, at least thats a start!

Well I soaked Ruby in a warm bath for 30 minutes. It doesn't look like she passed anything in the tub but I can't say for sure b/c the water was dirty & slightly yellow but she had yellow poop on her bottom before the bath. I lubed my finger to check her vent & got up to my knuckle & that's when she would start making noise & squirm. I couldn't feel anything, nothing at all. And nothing came out either. After I got her dry, I put her in her house & she pooped a slightly runny one. It had a hunter green gel like substance with white & yellow. Did I go far enough to check for a broken egg? If she had one in there wouldn't I have at least felt something???

Is her abdomen swollen?I would hope that if there was an egg in there you would have felt it, but I don't know as I have never examined for eggbinding. I really don't see any evidence for egg yolk peritonitis except the cooked egg poo (and I don't even know if that cooked egg stuff comes out at all). But with worms I have seen a dark mustard yellow foamy poo.

Sorry I hope someone with experience will drop in and help out.

With the pale comb I would be thinking anemia, and fluffed up is acting cold. Hmmmm if her abdomen isn't swollen then maybe you should be considering worms after all. Some vets will do a fecal check for worms for a small fee. Also you might have them check for coccidia.

If it were my hen, I would do a wormer and follow with an antibiotic. Then I'd carefully feed her scrambled eggs and plain unsweetened yogurt to build her back up. This is just my opinion and I really don't know what is wrong with your hen.

I hope you get some more help.

Her abdomen feels the same to me that it always has. It's not hard or anything, it just feels like a belly. I compared it with my other hens & they all feel the same. I REALLY do appreciate your help & all the advice you are giving me!! I've never dealt with a sick chicken so I don't know anything to do.

The cooked poo looking stuff was something I had never seen & that was the only way I could describe what was coming out of her. It could just be a weird poop that she had. I have no idea. I thought maybe anemia too but wasn't sure how a chicken could get that except mites/lice but she has nothing on her. I've checked her whole body and cannot find a thing. I work right across from a vet so I may just go ahead and take some in for them to check. I'm going to try the eggs & I'll have to get yogurt tomorrow, I only have some with honey in it. Thank you again!!

I read somewhere on here about someone elses chicken who was sick and wouldn't drink. What she did was soak bread with the vitamin water and the chicken would eat it. that way she still got a bit of the vitamins from it. Don't know if ruby would eat it as it seems shes not to interested in eating. But might be worth a try. I'm rooting for her to pull through!
