My little Ruddy Shelducklings have been living in our garden in our old dog kennel for almost a month now. Yesterday I decided to open their door and let them explore under supervision and mingle with the various other waterfowl that roams our yard.
That went really well, they found our little "goldfish-pond"(the birds ate those many years ago) and just enjoy lounging around on the lawn. In the evening I just herded them back into their kennel.

This morning the kennel door was open when I got out to do chores and the ruddies were sleeping on the lawn..... I thought I had gone nuts I clearly remembered locking them up last night, but my mother enjoyed them so much yesterday she let them out early this am and watched them herself!!!(that from the person who just tolerates this hobby of mine, her list of "like-birds" has expanded now from just peafowl to ruddy shelducks apparently

Here are some pics from this am, the one with the down remnants on its head is 3 weeks younger then the other. The older one is clipped, the younger one not yet, the feathers are still growing out.

In Canada you don't need a permit for Ruddies, dunno about the US.

They are cute! but the pushy temperament is already showing thru. second day out and they boss around the australian spotted ducks and try to take bites out of my juvi cortunix quail that I have on the lawn in a rabbit cage. Their beaks are too big to fit thru the wire so its kinda entertaining to watch how bend out of shape they get cause they cannot reach the quail.
At this point they have given up showing them whos boss

They plop them selfs beside my Scovie drake most of the day and watch everything.

I love these guys, they get better by the day. Absolute sucks for being around people and non-stop chatting with us! They see me come out of the house and they run across the lawn calling at me and come to a sliding stop about 5 feet from me. They have coloured out and are indeed a pair!!!
They are the only birds we have right now that LOVE being sprayed by the hose, they see me turn it on they are chattering at me and waiting for me to spray them. The geese run, the scovies run and the ruddies stand there preening and catching drops chasing down the spray if I move it off them.

They seem to enjoy the company from the geese and spend all day hovering near them grazing with them etc.
