My Science Teacher said something I do not particularly agree with....

Ask your teacher how this happened. I'm thinking the scientist injected volumizing conditioner...

Sunchick,

To begin with I hope you take no offense from my previous post. I know many
good teachers and I suspect you are one. Since you are in education I'm sure
you know many more good, and bad teachers than do I.

What Dinos is facing is really not science, it's psycology and human interaction.
I see no advantage in confronting this man. Picking your battles in life can be tough.
Dinos has the wisdom to come here and ask for advice. Dinos has also
learned the real truth. I can't rant on forever on this. It's a sensitive subject for me.

The thought did cross my mind that he was pulling their legs. Sometimes challenging
people with something like this motivates them to achieve greater things.

Keep being an open minded teacher. I must say that the teachers that made the
biggest difference in my life were my 7th and 8th grade teachers. There is something
special about that age group and the people who choose to teach them.

Well, you'll have to find a way to do it in a very non confrontational way then. Offer to give a presentation in a different class! LOL! Or make a poster and put it up in the room or in a different room!

Plus, if you see any evidence of grade hating, go right up to the principal and get your parents involved. Parents are powerful when they get involved. If we want to get schools to get better, you have to get involved and show everyone you aren't using school for daycare.

I have pretty thick skin. I too faced several older teachers in college that didn't believe that females should have been in science

I wondered about pulling Dinos leg because my FIL used to do that with his students. He taught "wood shop" which is now becoming a lost art and used to tell the students that wood grew longer due to "wood stretchers" among other things....he is quite the card, and a wiley ole teacher....he he he.

I have both 7th and 8th grades....I like to tell them Knowledge is power....Go forth! Conquer...!!! Rule the World!! I really do say this....the kids Love it and think I am nuts! what you have to do to reach them = DO IT!

When kids think your nuts they listen more and never forget you. I'm perfectly happy
when my son's friends refer to me as the crazy chicken dad.

I can't believe nobody here has suggested you to convince this teacher to hatch some eggs in class.
Be sure to gather eggs that will produce a variety of colors and when a black/brown/red/blue/grey chick hatches, I'm sure some student will question his yolk theory!

If you ask, I'm sure PurpleChicken will even give you some eggs that will produce purple chicks.

Im a science teacher-chemistry, biochem-college though. Although I am eligible for Bio and chem cert at the high school level--it's actually what my masters is in.

I for one LOVE when my student prove me wrong--although I am not stupid enough to say something like "would I tell you it if it werent true" unless I am VERY SURE I am correct. I usually try to go "Hmmmm...lets see, what makes sense" and work it out with them, then get the data for the next lecture if need be. A student checking up on me and the info I pass out is AWESOME....but it needs to be done repectfully. If someone is doing it because they hate you and want to embarass you I am sure you'd become defensive. But if they are curious and it becomes a bit of a healthy competition than it can be a great motivator---even at the college level.

I agree with the hatching eggs. Tell your teacher you would like to study scientific method and you want to test the hypothesis he has created by experimentation using dependant and independant variables as well as controls and constants-such as temp and humidity- throughout the experiment. You then plan to re-experiment or redevise a hypothesis based on your experimental data.

How could he not be impressed--or at the very least listen a bit.......

I really do say this....the kids Love it and think I am nuts! what you have to do to reach them = DO IT!

My students think I am crazy when I try to convince them that the periodic table is cool and that chemistry is MAGIC!!! I thought they would think it was cool because I am SO COOL...but them I realized I wasnt cool and that I probably just sound dorky. Hey at least I still have my youth!!!
