My dear chicken Topaz had a limp comb, stopped laying eggs and started to lose weight. Took her into my lovely vet and after taking a couple of x-rays it was established that she had eaten a wood screw. The Dr. said it would be a thousand dollar surgery! He did take pity on me and reduced the price and operated that afternoon....she survived!!! It has been 6 days since and she is back to her old self.

I just wanted to send out my gratitude to this very special vet who always cares and treats every animal in the best possible way.

OH MY!!! I am very naive and though they would not eat things like that! Thank goodness she's ok and you have a very nice vet!!

Thanks for the warning too -

hope she recovers completely from this really screwed-up experience.

Wow, amazing pic! That had to be some tummy ache!

I can't believe she was actually able to get that in her mouth, let alone swallow it...and what was she thinking anyway to eat something that was so obviously not food?

I feel your pain on the surgery bill, I too am over-run with animals that go to strange lengths to hurt themselves and cost me lots of cash.

But I love them all, so I will keep running myself near bankruptcy to rescue them every single time.

I had a similar situation with my buff minorca, she foung and swallowed a 2" roofing nail, I have no idea where that nail came from, but she managed to pass it through her system up until it turned sideways right at the vent and pierced her.

I didn't know anything was wrong until I noticed she was dripping clear fluid from her vent at an alarming rate and leaving a trail...

I had to cut the nail in two to get it out.

I just knew she'd never lay again, but in 2 weeks she started laying just like normal.

Crazy bird!

As an xray tech, I see lots of foriegn bodies on images but I can honestly say that's the first time I've seen a screw in a chicken! Poor chicken, cool xray! Glad she will be finei

ha ha.. I get it...screwed chicken! lol!

I read this once and thought maybe she was going to die..saw the good fortune and left without a comment.

Just saw the title again and DUH! good one!

Glad she is okay!
I am constantly picking up nails and screws that I find on our place. I will be even more paranoid now.

Rooster-Red: How did you get her to hold still while you cut the screw???
