My son was right! Scary!!

It could be something as simple as a draft or an uneven settling of the house that causes the door's on the closet to tend to open up. Don't get the heebie jeebies right off the bat. Try checking to see if the frame is level, if so then hold a candle in the closet and see if it flickers or use smoke (could use a match blow it out and use that smoke to see if there is a draft). If that is not it either then try simply screwing in a hook and eye type easy instillation latch. it will keep the door closed.

If the door is opening after all THAT...... call the church and....

yeah, I don't like that kind of thing. In the old house we used to live in (that is still on our property and is right next door to our new house) there were old pictures hung on the wall, one of a family with a totally EVIL looking little girl, that you would swear MOVED... and the other picture was of an old, EVIL looking lady, who'd look at you, just glaring... wherever you were in the room...we took the pictures down, and then had a run of weird things happen, the REFRIGERATOR would open by itself, just swing (against gravity since the room was not flat, but sloped right to left) open, and stay open in the night. I'd wake up to the glowing light of the inside of the fridge... and you could hear people walking 'upstairs' in what sounded like big boots... but we didn't have an upstairs, just an attic for storage. freaky. (we ended up putting the pictures back up, but covered them with pretty cloths... no more problems... Our new house is too young to be haunted, though my 5 year old DD swears there's ghosts in her room.

Ok, so I normally don't admit this to people I don't know well because I tend to get one of two reactions... either people think it's really cool, or really weird. But I am the Founder of a paranormal investigations team called Colorado Paranormal Research and Investigations (www.cprinvestigations.org) and I gotta say I agree with a few posts on here that most likely, you are going to be able to find a logical explanation to the occurrence. Most likely loose hinges or a bad latch. Closets are notorious for not closing all the way (or not latching completely to be more accurate) and then popping open with the slightest breeze, or even from the pressure of stepping on a floor board in, or near the room causing it to swing open seemingly for no reason. Aside from mystery thumps and knocks, doors opening on their own are the most reported phenomenon I hear.

That being said, if you rule out all those factors and the door is still opening, chances are you are still not dealing with anything that will harm you or your family. I know unexplainable occurrences will put your hair up something fierce, but most activity of this nature, if not logically explainable, is benign and just the "getting your attention" variety. Have you guys experienced anything else in the home that is unexplained? Do visitors randomly feel uncomfortable in your home? Any weird sounds/smells/ sights? These are all things that might help you figure out what could be occurring in your home.

Oh and not to make matters worse, but new houses are not immune to activity surprisingly! You'd be shocked how many new houses I investigate a year.

well Poop. that isn't really helpful! I don't think our house is haunted now, but I do think, that if/when DH passes, he'll haunt our house, his blood, sweat, tears, chunk o' thumb, and 4 years of his LIFE are contained within the walls of our home...

I heard my son playing in the closet a few times and say either "hello" or "goodbye"
He was younger at the time, while I was pregnant with my youngest son, so no one was here playing with him.

When I tried sleeping in that room or the other one I always get this "thick aired" feeling and could never sleep in there.

I believe that energy can outstay its original source. I don't believe in ghosts or whatever, but I do know that I met a terribly negative bathtub once, and I wasn't the only one at the party who noticed it.

Affecting energy is fairly simple, I think... good massage therapists, acupuncturists, jin-shin and feng-shui practitioners can do it.

Re Feng-shui:
- I consciously decorated my wealth corner to attract positive energy, and started keeping my money and even experiencing some minor windfalls.
- My across-the-hall neighbor had hung a mask on his door to "scare the bad juju away". It apparently came in MY door instead, as I started having rather bad luck as soon as he did it. So I put my own good-luck charm on the door and sprinkled some salt across the threshold (at my landlady's suggestion), and the bad luck stopped.

Jin-shin works for me. I can feel the energy moving in my body. I have a friend who's a heavy skeptic, and she knows when her massage therapist is "on", because she can feel the energy in her body responding.

Things that people commonly employ in New Orleans to shake the negative energy in a house/room:

Fan the corners to move the air/energy around and freshen things up
Sprinkle water around the perimeter of the room, or in the corners, or to the 4 points
sprinkle salt across doors/windows to keep bad things out
Sage smudges
paint the porch ceiling "haint blue" (represents water, over which spirits cannot pass; or just makes wasps think it's sky and not suitable for building nests... it depends on who you talk to, and how you feel about wasps)

The first palce the the ex and I had was a really old little building that had been a storage shed for Burlington Northern in the early 1900's when Rock Springs was a booming mine town. It had been refurbished and turned into a cozy little 2 bedroom house. There was a storage space ABOVE the shower with a sliding cupboard door on it. I had dreams about little boys when we moved in there, and the ex and I were always a little creeped out in there. I asked the neighbors, and they said that like 30 years ago a little family lived there with 2 little boys. They were playing hide and seek and the older one helped the younger one up into the bathroom storage space, and the little one fell out and broke his neck and died. No wonder we were creeped out and I kept dreaming about little boys in that house!
