My son was spurred.

Agree with Don Rae. Any puncture near a joint needs medical attention ASAP. What were the circumstances leading up to the injury? If this attack was not provoked, that roo needs to be put down, and if the neighbor is reluctant to do so, you need to file a police report. This roo is a menace unless your son was in some deliberate way antagonizing him. Also, take photo of the injury today for future evidence.

With a child I wouldn't hesitate. Take him to a DR. For care. He might not have a well developed immune system and will need antibiotics. It takes those wounds a long time to heal so it needs to be watched till there is no more scabs.
I have been spurred by my rooster on two different occasions. His spurs are about 1-1/2 inches long and caused deep puncture woulds. The wounds take a very long time to heal and need to be constantly observed for infection. It's been over two months and there is still redness even though it is completely healed. Yes I still have the rooster. The first attack was because I had a long flowing dress on and he felt threatened by the movement of the material. The second time he thought I was hurting one of his hens (I was holding her and she was putting up a fuss). The boy didn't necessarily have to do anything wrong except for in the roosters' eyes. just something out of the norm can seem like a threat to them.
