If the barn is closed up tight, you may also want to look for places the predator could be hiding inside the barn.

Sorry for your loss.

As you can see from other posts there are several predators that fit this M.O., so I won't venture a guess as to which it is, but because of the number of chickens taken I would think it is more than just 1 animal.

The best solution for a persistant predator is a loss of sleep on your part and a 12 gauge shotgun. When predators know there is an easy meal somewhere, they tend to be pretty tenacious getting at the meal. The best way of deterrence is to completely remove the predator.

Oh Kathy, I am so very sorry for your unexpected & severe loss. I pray for comfort & healing for your broken heart, for wisdom in planning your next steps, and for swift success in capturing this predator & any of its companions!

We need to launch our own TV show, "CSIoultry". We could feature unfortunate instances such as yours, investigate to learn the identity of the predators, and devise the best solutions.

I'd tune in for a show like that, wouldn't you?

What a good idea. I think BYC should have it's own show, PBS, Discovery? More drama and education here than most shows and I bet people would watch it.

I am so so sorry. What a horrible thing to happen. Last year, I had a dog take three of my 5 hens and it was devastating.

The only good thing about it is that I only have to make a dog-proof pen. The miserable hunting dogs around here keep all the other predators down to nothing. So the dogs are the only thing left to worry about.

Sorry for all your losses. I say it was a family of coons. Sounds exactly like what happened to mine. Lost all 16+ large adult birds in two nights. Coons broke in and learned how to open the door latch... Most were gone without a trace besides a few feathers. They will take them to the closest body of water they feel safe eating at. In the following nights, I got 3 coons in a row... A HUGE parent coon and two smaller ones. They can get though small cracks, and dig under things no problem, they can also push in wire and rip chicken wire when they are really hungry in the winter. No idea what they were gong to do with about 100 lbs of chicken...
