My worm box incubator

I just set 9 eggs this morning. They are black sex link (Black Star) I think. I got them from a lady at work. She said they were just laid yesterday.

I have the same thermometer with little probe that you have.

I am regulating my temperature and think I have it perfectly set.

I put the probe in one of those water wigglers to test what temps the core was coming up to.

When hatching eggs should the air temp be 99.5 or should the center of the eggs be 99.5?

I figure I am not going to worry about the air temp so much if I can regulate the core of the water wiggler to maintain between 99.5 and 100.5 ( +/- 1 degree rule implied).

Would you agree?

I made an egg candler today. It is made from a large cardboard tube (3 inch inside diameter). I put it on top of a bulb out of my seed starter box. It seems to work very well.

For everybody that is using computer fans and having trouble finding a wall wort for it, why not just use a computer power supply? It ran the fan while in the computer, it should run it just fine in your incubator. Of course this is assuming everybody is using scrap computers for this project, if you have to buy a computer power supply, it is cheaper to find a wall wort.

usbr,

I took the fan out of an old power supply that doesn't work.

For our machines a power supply is a large metal box and would take up alot of space in the incubator. Plus I don't have an extra one laying around. The power supplies for our servers and machines cost $79+. That is an expensive fan to put in a very warm humid incubator. If we planned to later use it for something else I am betting the boards in it would be shot after a few 21 day cycles of hatching.

The old fan and an adaptor was small, more convienent, easy and dare I say cheap. LOL

$79? No way. As I said, I wouldnt even put in a $20 one if I had to buy it. Heck, I wouldnt even put it in the incubator either, I would wire it outside. I mearly mentioned the power supply because in this thread and others, people mentioned having trouble finding a sutable wall wort for powing the fan and around here old PCs are always available to scavenge parts out of (power supplies included).

It was my understanding that building one of these was a way to get a bigger incubator for a much cheaper price then even the smallest comercial ones. If thats the case, I certainly understand why you wouldnt use a expensive server power supply, much less a cheaper off the shelf PC supply. If you lived closer to me and gave me a weeks notise, I could give you a box full of used but working ones for free.

Im way too far, Im in the midwest but if you look at your local craigslist or even post an add, Im sure you will get more than you need. I drive past the county recycle center where people have to pay to get rid appliances and there is always a pallet full of stuff, you may have something similar near you. They have let me at the pile before if I promissed to not make a mess for the fork lift driver.

HTH,
Rich
