MY WORST FEAR CAME TRUE!!

I'm so sorry. As a mom of a 9 year old myself I know your ds must be devastated. I really dislike dogs. So I'll reserve my feelings on how I would deal with them. But I will have a lock and key on my coop and run. Dogs can figure out how to open even those locks shown. That may be why they are out roaming the streets in the first place, they broke out of their run or yard.

Not to be so graphic but you know the sweet little doggy(smaller the dog, more visousthey can be) can have more of the killing instinct than the larger dogs. In the pack( lets think of how the pack thinks and reacts) the larger and much faster dogs pull the animal down- the larger and the smallest ones give the killing bites. Think of the Rotwhiller or the American Bull Mastifs (Pit Bulls) have those jaw's for pulling the animals down and keeping them down. We must be diligent owners and the pack leaders to show our dogs that what ever we have is not to be touched. Not only that but any dog that runs free is then considered a feral dog and is fair game. As a farmer or animal hobbist has the right to shoot and pertect our lively hood and our livestock. If the dogs are friendly then try and return the animal and warn the owners that if it happens again you have the right to shoot with out cause as long as it is going after your Poultry( they are livestock too).

Not to be mean to the dogs( I like dogs) but if they came near my chickens and tried to eat them I would seriously beat him with a stick and kick him. In our neighborhood dogs have to absolutely stay on leashes at all cost when they're outside so when he comes down to our place he really gets it!!!!!

I am so sorry for your loss. I hope your eggs hatch quickly and help to heal your son's broken heart.
I had a close call yesterday...I've been letting my Gingernut Rangers (~22-24 wks) free range in a fenced paddock when I'm at work. So I come home and I'm in the house 10 minutes when Maggie, the 4 year old neighbor says her dog is going after one of the hens! Now the girls next door, ages 4-11 like to go check for eggs and feed the hens meal worms so I thought maybe they went in without asking and forgot to lock the gate, I asked them and they said no and I believe them, the gate was locked. So Molly the 7 year old had grabbed the hen away from her dog boots while the twins, Emma and Erin took boots home. It seems that the hen is okay, she was okay this morning and was eating fine...I had never seen them fly and thought maybe they just wouldn't but looks Iike I was wrong. Thank goodness for the tutorial on wing clipping...I hope I've learned my lesson. I thought I would have issues with my own dog, who is a bird dog and has sneaked in past my legs and gone after them once already...luckily, he listens well and when I told him to back off he did...never thought I would have issues with other dogs in the area...Ah ya live and learn.
My neighbors on the other side heard the commotion and came over to see if there was anything they could do...and then said "Welcome to the world of raising chickens"...lol
The good part in all this was seeing how little Maggie ran to alert me, Molly grabbed the hen carefully and very professionally I might add, and the twins took the responsibility of getting the dog home...they so enjoy spending time with the hens and now I see have become very responsible girls in the making....
Through every tragedy is a blessing...I hope you find yours...

I dont understand.......!! You have fences and gates to keep your animals in and other animals out. Dogs are coming into your property and you um and er about it, even worse, you've got a young bloke going to shoot at them with plastic bb's. Sounds like a disaster waiting to happen.
Fence your place properly, and shoot everything that you dont want inside that fence.
I am retired off 20,000 acres and I tell you, if anyone ever heard a strange dog barking, or our work dogs were agitated, it would be 4x4's, spotlights and rifles. You gotta Toughen up, protect what is yours.

Cheers........The Dog

Sorry for your loss.No plastic bb's though. That is considered cruelty. It won't stop them anyway.Trap and or kill and move on.

Big Dog- 20,000 acres? Absolute heaven it must be! I have less that one acre and kids call it the dead zone, because I no longer tolerate pests and predators on that little piece of land.Work too hard to sit and cry anymore over the death and destruction of my things. I take care of the problems now.
