Wow. The list of suspects seems to grow.... Ok. I confess. It was me.

Ahem. For now, I was leaning toward one of the green egg layers, but following the principle of parsimony, I think MP's line of reasoning should be tested first.

the Butler! the butler did it!

Ruth laid the egg in the barn... the family of raccoons got the egg out of the barn and on their way home down the brickroad, they got spooked by the ghost and dropped the egg and ran! rex barked at the raccoons alerting the butler that something was awry. the butler running out to see what the fuss was about, and having poor eyesite at night without his glasses, mistook the egg for rex's ball and placed it in rex's bed so no one would step on it and fall.

Oh Beefy that is good!!! Ruth, the green egg layers that were out, are you saying they were definately locked up the night before? Did a new green egg layer move into the neighborhood and picked your house to lay eggs. I guess Rex is out of the game?

maybe your husband dropped one egg on the brick walk (accidentally) and the other one was dropped onto the grass and rex found it and thought it was his ball and so he took it to his bed.

Hubby let the chickens out, saw an egg in the nest box and thought to bring it in for you buuuuut he dropped it on the way in but forgot he had the egg in the first place so it didn't get cleaned up. One of the green egg layers thought Rex's pillow would be a great nest and laid an egg there.

the husband! the husband did it!

the husband was trying to frame rex for chewing up his favorite slippers! he played up the story of the ghost and the raccoons to throw you off of his trail so you wouldnt suspect that HE let the chickens out HE left the trail of broken egg leading to Rex's house!

either that or Rex and Ruth (chicken) have been sleeping together...
