Mystic Marans - speckled egg?

She's shipping eggs to me! But I will keep you guys posted. I am following along the Halloween Hatch-A-Long although my chicks won't be here by Halloween - probably a little after. Woohoo!

I thought I caught my neighbor's EE being broody and was really hoping I could just sneak them under her... but nope. Just taking a mid-day rest in the nesting box!

I have blue splash marans that just started laying. The eggs are darker but not the darkest. However, I notice if they sit out on the table for a couple of days they get darker. The darker the egg the lower the production. The Marans color is "painted" on the egg as it slowly goes down the oviduct. The slower the darker, so less eggs. I was surprised to see the mystic marans was so light. so goes truth in advertising.

My Mystic Marans lays a lighter brown egg. No real speckles to speak of though sometimes when her "printer" has an off-day it can be. But hers are even lighter than the Wyandotte's and much lighter than my Wellsummer's.

The Marans color is "painted" on the egg as it slowly goes down the oviduct.

I believe the brown coating is applied in the shell gland(uterus) after the shelling is complete.

If you want the really dark eggs, then you need to look into getting BCM from a breeder. They focus on egg color more than hatcheries do.
