Mystic Marans - speckled egg?

And a Marans crossed to a light brown egg layer will lay paler eggs than pure Marans.

I think these Marans are a mix of Black Copper and Barred Rock.

Thanks for the tip! Breeder is a good idea.

We looked at typical barn red paints but ended up going with a mixed Valspar paint at Lowe’s. I can get the name if you’re interested. Pic attached.

Hello. My Mystic Marans hen laid her first egg today! While it is pretty, I am disappointed it is not a dark chocolate like Townline Hatchery’s website assured me they would be. I think these Marans are a mix of Black Copper and Barred Rock. Do you think these eggs will get darker as she ages/gets the kinks worked out of laying?

I got 15 pullets from Townline Hatchery too and was looking at Mystic Marans for next year. Good to know that the eggs may look more like a welsummer! I have 3 of those, when they start laying I’ll post to compare! Otherwise I’ve been very happy with my girls

Happy to help! I was considering getting Welsummers, but I guess now I don’t need to!

Black copper lay the darkest eggs if they are from a good breeder . My favorite are Wheaten Marans from the Bev Davis line I had some for 10 years . there is a fellow on ebay that sells eggs from those lines as a matter of fact I have one hen in my coop and plan on getting more in the spring if they are still available then .

That's why they call them Mystic it's a mystery what you are going to get from below standard breeding

Well ya done did it now... inspired me to order hatching eggs from a local breeder. She did start out with Bev Davis and a few other well-known lines, and has very dark chocolate eggs. Of course once I started ordering Marans, I ended up with a few OE and EE/Frizzle crosses here, a few Silkies there... COVID and working from home have made the world my chicken-raising oyster! My poor husband Thank you for your advice.
