Myth Busters, BYC style

Ooo! Ooo! A myth busters chicken edition! My kind of peeps. Here’s a myth for us to test out- which will last longer(unrefrigerated)- washed or unwashed eggs? Washed with water or straight out of the hen?
Good! I am going to need a secretary at this rate!

I don't have a way to test this theory because I only have 1 rooster(Dominique called Abraham). So Abraham has 14 ladies in his harem. He is 2 yrs old. Last year I had 2 hens go broody, I put them on eggs, and out of 12 eggs I had 7 that didn't develop and looked infertile. So my question is- what number of hens is "ideal" for 1 rooster to consistently cover??? Is it a case of " so many ladies and not enough time"?
When i lived in TN i had 20 coops plus tractors etc. I kept 1 roo with 8 hens and had good fertility.

I've had unwashed eggs in the pantry go as long as three months and were fine, also did find a few stinkers in the crowd... Didn't have courage to try any longer without treatment.

@CapricornFarm An off-Topic subject, But i'm slightly curious, When did you Guineas first start laying? I currently have 13 Guineas, Not enough males though, 10 hens and 3 males, My Guineas are almost a year old yet no eggs from them  most of the hens are fenced in so they aren't hiding their eggs.
These guineas are mid July of last year and they have been laying for some time now. My problem is i have 4 hens and 10 roosters. But i must say that mine are laying early compared to others around here. I went to a swap recently and no one had heard of anyones guineas laying yet.

Good idea. I should make a list. I have a coop partitioned in half but my chickens are August of last year chicks. So pretty much full grown. But maybe i could test it on guineas! Or quail...

You could attempt to figure out the monthly/weekly savings (if any) of using FF too. Actually measure and keep track of your dry feed consumed and then FF consumed over the same period of time. It's a bit tricky though... You could do a week of FF and then a week of dry with the same birds, but the weather would be a variable or you could split your flock and feed half the FF and half the dry, but then the fact that it's different birds would be a variable. hmm...

Oh so are they seasonal layers? This is my first year with guineas, Decided to skip raising them as keets and buy them as adults. i've definitely bought a few too many hens though.. so i'm going to try and hatch some more this year and pray for some rooster.. Huh, I think that's the first time i've ever said that?
