N.E. Chickenstock 2011!!!!!! Who's up for it??

they'reHISchickens]Final count: 10 Marans out of 19 eggs total from Cottage Garden and AHappy Chick I think that's a good outcome for our first marans attempt.
Question: how do you folks keep track of which chick comes from which egg as they hatch and wander all over the bator? I separated the two batches of eggs with the blue ones but I may as well not have bothered!

I am so glad you got some-your husband was so cute and excited about his "red eggs"!!
I think that is pretty good for a Marans hatch. They do seem to be harder to hatch and you have to keep the humidity down.
You can use a plastic container in the incubator, I have been using a strawberry container cut in half and then banding to tell test breeding hatches apart.

CottageGarden: hubby wants to switch from his blue egg layers to orps and marans. And SIL now wants red eggs too, but my daughter only wants bantams,so she may work on some interbreeding. These men and their chickens!
We have noticed the marans chicks are much quieter to handle than the EEs I hatched with them. There are 4 lighter- colored ones. Are these blue marans, or are they the males that I read are a lighter color? There is also one that is clean -legged. At least I think it's a marans because it has white wing tips. My EEs were black too and I have to study their legs to tell who is who.

I am sure some of each CottageGarden & AHappyChick's chicks hatched and in probably the same proportions, but unless they have a way of telling them apart, I certainly don't!

Steph, Barney is doing wonderfully here and really likes his girls! I have 6 black chicks from him now ( for sale, btw) and will hatch another batch in August when #1 DD visits with her family.

Well, then dont show him this, one of the moms of your chicks (0:
It will be fun for him when he has his own from your new babies!!(BluexBlue will give you Blue, Black, and Splash)

The Time chickenstock article should be out this Friday. It will be dated July 12th. Some areas may not recieve the magazines until Tuesday, July 6th. It seems that "Jim" holding a banty roo is the photo Deidre went with. There is also an online section that I am waiting to get a link for. I spoke with Deidre earlier this evening.
