Naked Neck/Turken Thread

That's a boy. The area of dark red coming on central wing and shoulders are classic darker pyle zone areas on roosters.

Welcome, newbies! Hildar, your hen strongly reminds me of my one barred hen. She's very big and getting old, trying to set eggs from her and her sister this year.

Thanks for the welcome. I love the barred look. I sure hope you can get some out of your hens. I plan on later on when I have more hens hatching some out to add to the flock. There are not many Turkens at all in our area, I have even done searches for breeders in the area and nothing. Put an ad in the paper looking for Turkens and had more people calling me asking me if I found anyone that had some because they wanted some.

So far nothing though. So instead I am buying some this year through cackle hatchery. I shall get them one way or the other.

If you like that hen, I'd suggest breeding her. Half of her chicks would hatch out with the naked necks and it would carry on her favorable qualities also.

If you like that barred look, breed her with a barred rooster or a solid black rooster(this will be a sex linked mating- able to tell sex of chick at hatch).

I didn't realize you could sex them with a black (I know I can with whites in some breeds). I will have to give that a try later on. Maybe in generations to come. But I sure want some turken babies from her next year. She is my big baby girl. If I can pass on all of her good qualities it would be a plus.

The lady today came by and picked up the eggs. As I told her the turken eggs are only 1/2 turken. But she decided that she wanted the eggs, and my other eggs that were in the 2 dozen. However once she saw my little hen she wanted to buy her. I told her no, I couldn't possibly do that. So when I get my mix of babies she wants any extra turkens I may get in the bunch. I told her sure if she wants the extras.

I just found out that our NN barred rock pullet is mating with our white silkie roo, not sure if our sizzle is mating also, but have also witnessed our white silkie roo mating with NN buff pullet. I don't know anything about hatching, but I thought it could be a fun project for us to hatch a couple of eggs. Any thoughts on what might need to be done to try this, I have hens that will sit on eggs when they go to lay for the day, they will tuck others' eggs under them and sit on them until we remove them. Could that be a sign of broodiness? I have been trying to find out info on various posts about broody hens. I suppose I could get a small incubator/brooder? Anyone ever had a successful hatching just from keeping them warm, do they need to be turned, and etc.....

I wouldn't mind seeing some babies with the sizzle and another like "June Bug" as my husband calls her, she is all black NN but shimmers greens and purples in the sun! So sweet too!

My daughter would fall in love with that Buff, she loves the BO's and the Turkens. Having both in one would be just awesome.

Broodies won't leave the nest even w/o eggs in it, they flatten and growl or screetch when you come near them and especially if you try and take eggs.


Incubators can be very easy to operate, I think you can rent one from the extension office.

Not really, cause it snowed like 2-3 inches early today, but will get into 50s - some 60s rest of the week. No news report said and not a thing about snow, news only said "rain at night". A donkey could run better news weather then those college grads with degrees..

I put my old broody hen in a bean crate tonight and set eggs under her tried to pick out the Australorps and Red NN eggs as best as I can under her. My mom said "put green eggs under her!" cause she loves those color eggs. I put 1 green egg under the broody NN hen from a EE hen but I doubt it's fertile cause I seen my Australorp roo try to mate her (EE) and she lays flat on the ground and she face plants cause she cant support my Australorp roo weight.
