Naked Neck/Turken Thread

I think it sounds cool what you are doing. I'm sure it does take time. I think it's worth it. I think the Naked Neck chickens are fascinating, their looks, their history and the fact that they are rare. And the way some people are just like ewww! what is that?

My son has gotten more excited talking about breeding NN than entering in the shows. Not a lot of the people like the NN. My husband doesn't like them because they are not a very good breed for competing with, they never win the best of the whole show, but we have fun with them.

Good luck with your project draye!

Take Care, Cher

Actually one white NN roo managed to win either a best of show or pretty close to it! I think it was maybe last year or two?

Struggling to remember the breeder's name.. maybe it is Ed Haworth(spelling) of Oklahoma? Anybody remember?

I know he has been a long time breeder of NN and if you ever find a contact for him, he probably is an excellent source or would be far better help in locating good show stock... He hangs with 'serious show folk' I think but is definitely one of the guys serious about showing and breeding for it.

I do completely understand the whole competition thing though... with just 5 entries, Best of Breed does not mean very much.

But, it would be nice if there was a pool of show bred stock that's kept going. Sometimes I feel guilty about not having standard bred stock here.

No, you are not coming down too hard. I just lol, all of you chicken people that have so much knowledge. I go to these chicken shows and am surrounded by smart people, and their children are so knowledgeable, you guys just keep explaining it all to me, eventually some of it sinks in.

My son has also showed interest in the genetic part. We got out of showing for awhile, we just have been going to the shows to help out, he always likes the rare breeds, he won't even bother to show if it's not a breed that he really wants. He is also interested in bantam blue americaunas, but I'm just working on the NN right now.

Thanks again Kev!

Cher

It is exciting to know there's a young person wanting to show NN! I hope you find good stock, would love to hear any updates and it would be great to find more contacts for show NN stock as inquiries come up for them from time to time.

Good luck! :)

Haha great pic! I must have missed something.. details on how Rudy became famous? Is he selling chicken scratches(autographs) yet?

A local school (small the pic is of all the students K-4th) where my SIL works invited me to bring Rudy for a "show and tell" type event. He was so popular we had to go around to several other offices and classes so other teachers / administrators could see him, and then others students and teachers not "invited" to the young children's show and tell were hearing about it and coming over to check it out. Before it was all said and done I think nearly the whole school had made it's way there. The teachers later said on my SIL's fb page that the students talked about Rudy for the whole rest of the day.

Lol to hellbender,

Yeah, I know, and it can be frustrating, because it all depends on which breeds the judges know and what they
'think" they know. My husband got the kids involved in poultry for the competition, I was so not on board for all of the work just to win trophies and ribbons. But our kids belong to the Wisconsin Junior Poultry Association, they do all kinds of learning activities, there are very smart people working with these kids, and the kids are so smart. And the people are so nice. So, I gave in, I can now appreciate the purpose that brings everyone together. And so, you try to stick to the standard way that they run things, I would also like to breed the naked necks, because the handful of kids that would like some, can't find them anywhere either. So, I would like to try and stick to the most pure birds that I can.

If your wanting NN for show I would get them from Nava personally, her's are beautiful, just be sure and let her know what your wanting b/c she has nonstandard colors too.

That is supremely cool!

Here are the pics of the newest hatches this morning. 3 are out so far, couldn't pic the cutest pose so there are 3 poses of each chickie doo.

Look at that top knot!

Styling w/ the white eye liner

I'm very nervous about letting a broody try and raise a naked chick.

I'm sorry for just bumping in, but I got to say that I love your chickens, Kassaundra! I love all the exotic looking chickens you have and I would appreciate if you would take some photos of your older hens and roosters.

We love when everyone "bumps in" and thank you.

Wow! this sounds great Kev, I am trying to get a hold of Ed Haworth. I found a number, I did not get an answer or an answering machine, I will try tonight.
Thanks to everyone for your help. I think I have some very good options now. I will post pictures when we finally get our new babies.
This is an awesome site. You guys are very helpful!!!
