Naked Neck/Turken Thread

Great to read about kids learning this stuff early! I grew up in the country but we only raised cattle and of course I didn't appreciate country life then.

Sc is the scaleless gene, it is what caused Rudy to be featherless and have no scales.  It is a recessive gene not often found, but is natural, not gmo or man introduced.   Frizzled feathers are feathers that poke out instead on lying flat, I do not know the genetics behind them though,

Fascinating.. I didn't notice his legs lacked scales until you said that. Poor guy. getting too cold or overexposure to the sun must be a pretty big worry with him.

My son is in 4H. Does anybody know where I could get some pure bred Naked Necks to enter in the county fair and poultry shows?

Here is my up and coming NN rooster. He is by my now deceased Salmon NN rooster and out of a Golden Cuckoo mixed bred hen.

I guess that would make him a sex linked cross. Didn't think about that when I put the rooster and hen together. Looking at him though you can see it. Looks like a typical Black Sex link rooster, the smudging barring and white.

I don't plan on using him too long as I don't care for barring. Just for a season or so to get some better colored cockerels from the sire line. That Salmon rooster was about the best one I've ever had. Died way too young, wasn't even quite 2 years old, guess the winter cold weather was just too hard on him.

I have a Green Egger Naked Neck son of his that I'm using for more GENN's. also I have another GENN cockerel same age as the above cockerel with much better coloring.

Got a snap of him also.

I'm not sure that he will carry the blue egg gene though. His mother was one if two of hens that looked like this

They are very cute. But the judges are very picky and will disqualify anything that is not fully pure bred.

Thank you very much,
Cheryl

Most of the pics from today were way to out of focus to be usable, but this one I liked. It was my favorite of the day. It is a picture of the children when the sheet covering the kennel was removed and they could first see Rudy.

Haha great pic! I must have missed something.. details on how Rudy became famous? Is he selling chicken scratches(autographs) yet?

The reality is in the poultry hobby is if the individual bird matches the Standard, then it is qualified to show as the breed.

So, any bird with a dual purpose type body, in one of the recognized colors, yellow legs in most colors(black legs on blacks) and either a small bowtie or totally clean neck will qualify even if you personally knew the parents or grand parents were mixed or something like a line that 'breeds true and matches the standard' even if the starting gene pool were of several different breeds.

Duane Urch is involved in showing, he used to have several colors in standard and bantam but last I heard, he seems to have downsized his flock a lot so he might have only one color per size.. His information can be found on this website or online pretty easily.. his town is Owatonna if I remember right.

Nava on here has whites, is working on buffs, has gorgeous blacks....

edited to add- just remembered another source- I'm not sure of the exact spelling, bayshorek9? has many very nice NN in both recognized and non-recognized colors such as barred, mottle, etc.

It is possible to find a bird matching the standard out of hatchery stock but admittedly they do not breed for the show standard... they tend to be pretty good dual purpose birds though.. It seems they come mainly in buff with black tails however leg color is very variable- white, willow, slate and yellow. Large bowties more in the style of bibs is a big problem with hatchery stock though, making the hunt for a yellow legged, small bowtie out of hatchery stock to be a long hunt.

I'm not sure, but might be possible to get hits asking for show standard bred naked necks in the breeders and hatcheries sub forum..?
