Naked Neck/Turken Thread

A few pics from today Mom and baby, tried for better shots, but mom wasn't having any of it! And of course there is Rudy the rudester, it was really windy today w/ a cold wind so he got his sweater back today, he isn't happy about it either. Bella, the rudester's mate, though she loves the rabbits more. When he hatched I thought I saw feather follicles on his elbows and sure enough little fluffs at his elbows. One week to go!!!! :jumpy
I must ask about.. Rudy, is it? Is he the result of breeding a non bowtie naked neck to another non bowtie? I know it can happen to give featherless birds, same as a frizzled bird to a frizzled bird gives a frazzle...

No, no matter how many generations you go you can never make a naked chicken from the NaNa gene. Rudy has a double hit of the ScSc gene that is why he is naked. No matter what breed a chicken is, if they have a double hit of the ScSc gene they will be naked. This mutation was first discovered in a flock of New Hampshires in California in the 1950's

What is the ScSc gene? Or what is the characteristic of that gene? (I don't even know enough to ask the question.) And, for that matter, I've seen pictures but what causes a frizzle?

Sc is the scaleless gene, it is what caused Rudy to be featherless and have no scales. It is a recessive gene not often found, but is natural, not gmo or man introduced. Frizzled feathers are feathers that poke out instead on lying flat, I do not know the genetics behind them though,

If a chicken just carries one sc gene they could have nearly no outward signs, but usually will have some disturbance in the scale patterns on their legs, from a missing stripe of scales down the leg to just a missing scale on the inner "knee" area to just slightly widened spaces between scales. Sometimes very obvious sometimes almost imperceptible. If the chicken has both ScSc genes they will be featherless or nearly featherless. Rudy has two feather follicles one on each elbow. I have heard of some that are naked except for head feathers.

The more I learn the more I realize I don't know. Frizzles, frazzles, featherless chickens in sweaters! I love it! The rest of me may not be in the best of shape but my brain is getting a workout.

Don't feel alone. I sure my friends like Kassaundra, Kev, Draye and so many more to mention will affirm that we all learn something, just about everyday....especially when dealing with chickens...

Most of the pics from today were way to out of focus to be usable, but this one I liked. It was my favorite of the day. It is a picture of the children when the sheet covering the kennel was removed and they could first see Rudy.

Yes, I'll second that. Seems like every hatch I learn something new. Especially with all these mixed colors.
