Naked Neck/Turken Thread

They jump on the coop and then they get out.
I don't know how to prevebt them. How should I clipp their wings? Only few big feathers, am I right.

My chickens are laying every day except in thursday when I get three eggs and saturday when I get two eggs. Other days all five chickens lay. Also I weighted two hens that jump over all the time and they have 6.8 and 6.2 Ibs. How big should they be to not jump over?
And their run is fenced with only post and wire.

Oh, and @Flowerbh I love your rooster!

Those hens are probably as big as they'll get. How tall is your coop? My runs are 6 foot tall. I don't have a problem with mine getting out. Although until this past winter all of mine had a net top on them. The heavy snow and ice caved one of them totally in. I still don't have a problem with them flying out.

I did still however clip their eh gd jst ad a precaution. If you clip tge wings just clip the on one side, this unbalanced them to where they can't fly.

I helped clil the wings if an Anetican Gane hen once to keep her from flying. That didn't stop her at all. Those game birds are lulu at best.

They are old,8,6,4 years old. They don't grow anymore. My coop is 6.5 foot tall. I don't know, I have to think about it.

Yes. It's the only chicken my husband will claim as his! LOL!

Twice the size as a regular chicken!

He's gorgeous! I don't blame your husband for claiming him. I thought he looked like a Buff at first, but in this photo he looks more partridge in coloring. I've admired this breed but have hesitated in getting any because of the excessive heat we have here in AZ. All those feathers....I just don't know how well they'd hold up.

What you have are wise old hens who know a few tricks. A thought, is it possible to put up a wire fence thing on top of coop? So they can't get on top of it at all or on another place that makes it hard for them to jump out of their area.

For wing clipping yes, just the feathers on the hand part of the wing(primaries), don't clip the ones on arm part(secondary feathers)

From first hand experience, they do suffer. Heatstroke being a problem especially at 110+.

We put a few rows of wire around the roof yesterday and since tgen they jump on the post and then out. I think we will clip feathers.

That's the answer I was looking for. Thanks!

Haha, yes exactly!

Do you maybe know if I can do something like pinionig pigeons on very young chicks?

Yes any fowl chick basically can be pinioned. I would do it very your less then a week if it were me (probably day 2 ish maybe 3) Just one wing. It is very controversial even in water fowl, but works better for controlling flight then just cutting flight feathers, and is permenant.
